In my book its a stingray if chevy said its a stingray. When the took the badge off the side of the car they were no longer stingrays. Good call on hiding the cross fire badges. I woudn't consider putting stingray emblems on a c3 ricey, but its borderline. As an off topic side note, I think i'm going to have a big "Vtec in Training" badge made to put across my windshield.

As far as I'm concerned both C2s & C3s can be considered sharks.
1961 Mako Shark I is obvious prototype for the C2:

Then there was the 1970 Manta Ray:

Still, nobody refers to their C3s as "Mantas"

 

Well, not to get into this pizzing contest but a Stingray is a member of the shark family, but that's not the correct answer.

And another nugget of useless history...The shark body was supposed to go into production in the '67 model year but wasn't quite ready for prime time.

I once said I'd only consider a '68, and '77-'82s "Stingrays" if I saw an official reference from GM addressing them as such. As far as the '68 goes, I have:

But until I see something similar for the '77, it's up in the air. When I see an official GM ad that says so, or even if the '77 owner's manual refers to the car as a "Stingray", I'll accept it like I did with the '68, but not until.

The chassis is essentially the same from '63 - '82 . Other than minor changes, it's the same frame. The interior changes between '77 & '78 were not that significant. Not like the major redesign difference between the early C4s and late C4s. I guess what i'm saying is, if you can call a '77 a Stingray, you can call all C3s Stingrays, even if I don't personally think that is the case.

And as I said before, when I worked at the GM Desert Proving Grounds, there was a C4 notchback with "Stingray" decals on the fenders. I said if it's a real prototype, it's a Stingray regardless of the fact that it's a C4. You did not agree. Again, here's another example:

This prototype is the 1989 "Stingray III" It's NOT a C3, but it's a Stingray, period. If GM calls it a Stingray or Sting Ray, it is. If they don't, it's not.
I'm still curious as to the source for the information you present here and on that page. Is it your opinion, or did you get it from a solid GM based source? If you're source is GM based it would go a long way in convincing me a '77 is a Stingray. If it's your opinion, I think there's enough argument to throw your claim into doubt. The truth is what GM considers a Stingray, and what they do not. Until proof is shown as to what they consider these cars both of our opinions are just that. :chevy

There was a forum member that got mad when i said the transmission (turbo 350) in my '77 was out of a wrecked Chevy van. he seemed to think it was a sacrilege to have non Corvette parts in a Corvette. Is a '77 a stingray or not-who cares. :rolleyes:

The previous owner of my Stingray replaced the rear bumper cover and did not replace the emblem. Does that mean it's no longer a corvette? :jester

 

Yup...how about for a change, we start a thread complaining how everyone calls our cars "Chevy" when it is obvious that G.M. wants them to be called "Chevrolet". :D
