My 3 month old SFI approved damper just went south on me. FYI, it was a "Professional Products" (cheap China crap) unit. The outer ring has been spinning on me as discovered yesterday.
I just ordered a "Rattler" made by TCI from Summit today. No fluid or elastomer on this one. It's basicly solid with internal roller pins used to absorb the energy. Has anyone tried these yet?
The guy who built my engine won't use anything but the Rattler. He builds engines for several circle track cars in the Mid West and makes a decent living, so I figure he knows something about what he is doing.

That's very encouraging. Thanks.
Markus, According to the TCI web site and the guy a Summit, the rattle is only noticable at startup and shutdown. I'll let you guys know either way when I get it installed next weekend.
I've got one and love it. It is a bit noisy for a split second on start up and shut down, but you really don't notice it unless you're listening for it. I may be buying into their marketing, but I'd swear that the engine is smoother with the rattler than my old fluidampr.
my buddy installed one of those rattler dampers on his pontiac 406.
the rattle is only noticable when starting or shutting down the engine as TCI said.
there are some moving parts inside the damper. when engine is running, the parts are staying against the outer ring of the damper so you can't hear them.
if you ever hear them when engine is running, I think you will have a big problem (big crank vibrations) !
I don't know yet if it does work good because his car has not seen the road (his TH350 has no reverse after a rebuild :-()
I installed it this weekend and drove it to work today. Feels just as smooth as before. As others said, you can hear it loud and clear on startup and shut down only. My only complaint is with the timing marks. It would have been nice if they had used distinguishing marks for TDC and 10 deg increments. The marks are all the same and with my POS timing tab covering the marks on the balancer, it's a PIA to set the timing. Other than that it's

Same thing on my Streetdamper. All of the marks are hard to see. Should have painted the lines white or something like that to make them easier to see.
