I would agree with you, but I think they have proven themselves,it seems that GM has done some homework. How much power do I need??,that is the question,AND can I reduce the weight of my car another pound or so while not jeopardizing any reliability. ( I feel this will work for me)If it will bolt up????????? I am running stock motor ,will replace with a driver motor before to long.Car is not driven to much anyways, plus I kept all items I removed.
I wouldn't put a aluminum differential behind a 300HP 350 Vette! The carrier caps are aluminum in these rear ends, they wont put up with much abuse. My LT-1 has a chrome molly steel cap with 1/2" bolts on the drivers side as I knoew better than to trust the stock cap to live in a high HP enviroment at the drags. I know plenty of people who have gone to the early differentials but none that have trader early for late! Good luck if you do, I think you'll need all you can get!
Yes the 80-82 diffs are weaker. The 1/2 shafts are shorter so you'll nee to get new 1/2 shafts. Strut rods are also different and the spindle flanges are different. Don't expect it to be a cheap job. Your much better off staying with the cast iron setup and putting the money you were gonna use into converting everyting over into something else.
