Does anyone know the coolest temperature that this stuff can be successfully applied at? Reading about the fumes during application, it seems that it would be best to have the garage door open when it's being applied. It's getting a bit cool in Western New York right now.
I guess the real question is, can I apply this stuff with the garage heater on or will I kill myself from the fumes or an explosion. (Brush application not spray)
Thanks
I would run the heater for a while ... then at least open the door
slightly to get some air exchange when applying it. I think you will
be OK with the cold. It may take longer to cure, but as long as it
is warm enough to have some water vapor in the air (above 32), it
should be fine. I have stored some outside in sub-zero weather with no
ill effects noticed when using it the following Spring.
My advice if you go the POR15 route: Use gloss black or silver. Let it cure until tacky and then topcoat immediately with a good chassis black paint or a high quality enamel like I did. Don't waste your time with the semi-gloss POR.
- mostly.
When tacky, it should be dusted with the top-coat spray. That way,
the enamel adheres to the tacky POR - but still allows water vapor
in to react with the POR and fully cure it. After 24 hours or so, I would
then give a full top-coat.
If timing is an issue, I think the Rust Bullet stuff is better to use.
I believe it can be topcoated with anything at any time (after curing).
However, I have never used Rust Bullet - so you're on yoru own with that.
you know i cant stress how important it is to speak with someone who is familiar with por-15 if your gonna use it THE PERSON WHO SOLD IT TO YOU!!-(after all the problems i went thru because of miss application) you will have real problems if you apply this stuff wrong or dont follow directions- i just spoke with dave stubbs , from imperal restoration ,who i have known for 5 yrs now and dealt with.. i was telling him about some of the posts on por-15,(i also need the instructions for metal mask) i have read here-- 1st of all its not the same as super glue- dave knows chemists from por-15... por-15 will bond 2 parts tog, even if there is a gap between them-SUPER GLUE WILL NOT- super glue works when the molecules line up if there's a gap the glue wont work-por-15 will---another thing is eastwood is nothing more than bridge paint-and yes you should not breathe sprayed por-15- but listening to someone how to cut corners using this stuff will cause you BIG PROBLEMS
From experience. Follow the directions on the can re temp. The POR will flow out if the temp. is nice and warm, even applied by brush. However, it will look like you are trying to plant corn on your frame, as you will have nice furrows, if you try to put it on under about 60-70 degrees.
I used Por-15 and pressure washed with simple green, used their degreaser after and pressure washed. Then used their Metal prep called Marine clean I think, brushed on Por-15 one coat, and one top coat. Directions said at least 2 coats of each I believe, but mine came out beautifull
