Default Whale sperm, Ever hear of it

We used to call the posi additive Whale sperm. When I worked for a GM dealership back in the early 80s this is all we called it. I don't know where it came from or why we called it that. Has anybody else heard it called this or why it was called this?

The oil came from a sperm whale (remember Moby Dick with Gregory Peck, one of the best movies of the 20th century). Whaling provided many speciality lubricants in fairly small quantities before the possibility of extinction of a number of species basically shut down that industry. Modern chemistry can mimic but not duplicate those oils.

Default Cause that was an ingredient

Hi, They usta call it that where I worked also, someone told me that was because they used oil from a sperm whale in its make-up. Somewhere along the way they changed the formula (endangered species) to not use any sperm whale oil and that didnt work out too well untill they found a suitable replacement. Peace,,, Craig

Automatic transmission fluid used to have sperm whale oil in it too. I remember they had to take it out back in the early '70s when I was a line mechanic at a Chevy dealership.

I take it you are asking about the posi-lubricant additive?? It used to be made out of the Sperm whale oil. I've been told now the additive that GM sells is actually better than the original stuff. It just took them a while to get it right though... Dave..

its because the term "smells like bear sh$t" was used on the other gear lubricant..." whale sperm" was the only term left....

If you have seen these magnificent creatures close up you would not make light of their demise to produce automobile lubricants. You think a bb/454 is large............A former Biologist.

When I was a Radarman in the Navy we used a thick white liquid polish to clean plexiglass status boards. This was called whale sperm.

Being the 9th child from a family of 10 children,
our mom would never allow anything with sperm in it to
get into her chevy.

I think she passed that same dam advise on to my wife.

What more can I say..if it works..lube it up.. :o
