Default checking for blown fuses?

If I have a non-working function such as the cruise control and am checking for a blown fuse can you tell if it's blown just by looking at it or do I have to try a new one to see if the old one was bad? Thanks

You should be able to tell by looking at it after removng it, the metal Z shaped wire in it will be burned in half. If you are in doubt if it is bad or not, use an ohm meter on it.

Good advice, and I'd check it with an ohm meter anyway. I have seen a fuse that appeared good visually, but had infinite resistance when checked with the meter.

Most part stores also sell a kit with about 4 fuses and a tester/puller gizmo
The tester has three pins on one end. touch two of them to the fuse wire that is accessable thru the top of the plastic holder while the fuse is still in place. Green diode its fine, no diode, turn the gizmo around and use the tweezer end to pull the bad fuse.
The kit costs under $10.and saves the aggro of randomly pulling fuses and looking at them. Yes the ohm meter works, but the kit is small enough to stay in the car...
