I know I saw a thread about replacing u-joints on here , but I cannot locate it.
My 93 Ruby seems to have a viberation and I'm pretty sure it is the u-joints. Anyone have an easy way to replace them? Seem to remember something about getting some suspension parts out oif the way to make it easier.
Thanks in advance for any help..
I have both the manuals, howecer I seem to get more information here on the forum.
There was a thread a feew weeks back that had pics of cleaning the bolts etc.
I believe 8 mm socket is what is needed as well as a vice. I'm assuming you will replace the u-joints on the half shafts? If so
do one side at a time. Jack it up securing it safely. Remove the
tire andwith atleast a 10 in extension loosen the two u-bolts holding
the u-joint to the differetial. Get under your car and remove the
u-joint on the side by the tire. You will have to rotate the half shaft to get to all the bolts. There are 4 per side. You will also have to rotate and wiggle the halfshaft in order to remover the halfshaft from the car. There are E-clips holding the u-joint end caps. Remove these with needlenose pliars. Once this is done use a socket a bit smaller than the u-joint's end cap diameter. A press is needed to push on the socket which is placed on the endcap. It's a little messy but not difficult. I hope this helps if you have more questions, don't hesitate to ask me.
I'm getting ready to do mine this week and am wondering if the leaf spring and tie-rod need to be removed in order to wiggle the half shaft out of the car?

Nope, talking about my '92. Have you done yours yet? <--- Just realized that you posted the link to the photos and not the person who started this thread.

Sorry I just looked at your profile and saw a 69, so I thought you were in the wrong forum.:o
I found out today that the squeak I hear when I take off is the u-joints. After some searching, I have a shop that I trust. They gave me a price of about $1,200 to replace them. The guy told me it's about an 8 hour job and actually showed me what they would need to do.
Also the whining I'm hearing is the AIR pump. I've read that some people bypass it or some "gut" it.

What say you guys?
Just did u-joints on the left half shaft on mine not long ago. All I gotta say is now that I've done it once I don't think it would take me 8 hours to do all of them crawling around on the ground in my driveway. Otta be a breeze for a mechanic with the proper tools and a 4 post hoist. No vise nor other press required. I have a vise but it wasn't big enough. Two sockets and a hammer worked just fine for me.
The air pump can be replaced with an idler pully. I'm guessing the extra unburned hydrocarbons will then overwelm the catalytic converter. The result is more air polution if you care about that kind of thing.
