what is that breadbox exactly?
What is the purpose of the bread box? Is it hiding something? Was it suppose to act as a first version air bag? What is that thing exactly?

There was talk in the early 80s of new Federal regulations requiring a passenger side airbag, when that fell through they were stuck with the breadbox.

Pre-air bag crash pad. Soft material replaced the hard thin coating of vinyl/leather over the dash on the C3s, and it was also a convienient
hiding box for the ECM.
