Default Confusing carfax

Hi guys...here is what the carfax says on my 'vette, as far as where it was registerd and with how many miles.

03/28/1991- 65k miles, in Medford New Jersey -Title issued/updated

06/18/1993- 77k miles, in Quakertown Pennsylvania -Title/registration issued

06/19/1996- 78k miles, in Ballston lake NY - Title issued or updated
Loan or Lien reported

08/09/2002- no miles, in Mechanicville NY- Title issued or updated
New owner reported

5/27/2004- no miles, in Mechanicville - Title issued/updated

9/14/2005- no miles, in Mechanicville - Title issued or updated

This doesnt make any sense. Was the car driven without registration before 1991? What happened between 1993 and 1996...it was only driven 1k miles. Also, why was a loan or lein reported before it was sold? Finally, it says the "start date" of the warranty was in 1991. Any ideas?

Being an 86, it could be that the car was sold to the original purchaser before CarFax existed (I have no idea when CarFax started.) I think that CarFax only gets data from the stae DMV's so it looks like the car was sold in 91 with 65K miles on it.

The next owner drove it for 12K miles and sold it in 93. Why there is only 1K miles shown for the 1996 transaction is anyon'es guess. Car could have sat or most likely CarFax either got bad data or they screwed up entering the mileage (CarFax has been know to hose up entering mileage figures).

I think CarFax is reporting a sale in 96 with the buyer having to take out a loan to get the car. CarFax is saying that there is a registered owner ( the buyer) and a legal owner (the note holder).

The other transactions are probably sales but once a car reaches 10 years old, there is no requirement to show mileage on a title when it's sold.

As to the warranty start date, that one is hard to say. In 86 GM didn't have much of a warranty (probably 12 months and 12K miles) so the "in service" date should have been when the car was delivered to the first retail buyer.

c4, that might be true in your state, but in Washington regardless of age..mileage is reported on the sale.

Was talking about a federal requirement. The Certificate of Title in every state has to have a block on it to report vehicle mileage when the title is transferred to another owner.

In WA, our titles have a block that says it's not required to report mileage on a vehicle that is over 10 years old. But my titles are a few years old so they colud be old versions. When I bought my 87 a few years ago, I didn't have to report mileage on it even though it only had 67K on the clock.

That may change at some point as the number of cars that only have a 6-digit odometer is diminishing and the newer cars have 7 digits in the odometer.
