[UPDATE]: My Car is Fixed.... all high mileage L98s read within!!
Some of you may of known that my car was having an intermittent miss at high RPMs. Well Tuesday afternoon the car died completely and got no spark at all.
With the help of L98Terror, Phoenix, and Fastguy we got my car fixed and found the problem. My distributor gear as chewed up horribly, and finally 4 teeth broke clean off. I didn't get a shot of it yet, but I will as soon as I get it back (I left it in Fastguy's car). Every single tooth on the gear was worn down razor thing. If you saw this next to a new one you would crap your pants. There was almost nothing left of every tooth, and 4 of them were gone.
This allowed the distributor to skip completely out of whack (when it would turn) and blow my timing out of the water.
After installing a new gear from a distributor Fastguy had from his '75 (They are the identical distributor gear) the car runs like a champ again. My tachometer had been very very funky at high RPMs also. It would bounce around crazily anywhere over 4000. It would be at 4000, drop to 3500, back to 4300, just all over the place.... now it is smooth as silk all over the board.
So I think I would say to all high mileage L98 drivers, please check your distributor gear if you have a chance. It honestly isn't very hard to do at all. My car has 145.5k miles on her right now, and this thing self destructed. I am still going to have to pull the oil pan to fish out any parts that may still be sitting in there. :(

Remember the 'fix it' lists we put up a few days ago? Sounds like I just added another item to my list. 135k for me, so it sounds like a pretty good thing to check. Thanks for the heads up Scorp.

My IROC's distributor gear was pretty worn at 60k miles when I bought it. The rotor would turn back and forth about a quarter inch. Make sure thats the right gear, its a lot easier to replace dist. gears than camshafts.

ACDelco part # 10469459. It should not be more than about $23. Double check the part # if you are ordering one. The gear on my 41000mile GTA was sharp so it may not just be high mileage cars.

Ummmm, yeah, well see, I got in my car to go to work today and put my shirt sleeve on the greasy gear you left on the console. I got pissed and whipped it out the window. I know where it landed though, I'll find it when I get home.

thank you scorp..
i believe my original distributor is in my engine with 97k on the odometer. maybe this weekend we'll pull it and double check all the teeth on the gears. i can only hope lpe checked things over before putting it back in. remembering back, i know they put a different gear on it to make compatible with the 219 cam.
thanks again.......

Scorp, I would recommend that you pull the distributor and check the gear to see how it is.
I cannot remember for sure but I think stock roller cams require different distr gears than flat tappet cams. You need to go to a GM dealer and get the right gear for the cam. I don;t think the '75 gear is the correct one.
Actually, it might be a good idea just to get a new distributor.

I looked at my Gm catalog. I think you need a special melonized (Don't knwo what melons have to do with it but.... )gear for the steel camshaft used in roller cam engines. You can also get a whole new distributor assy.
