Default Poll: Bodywork/Paint forum needed?

I believe that it would be beneficial on our Corvette Forum to have a forum under "General Corvette" for Bodywork/Paint.

Since most body/paint issues are not limited to any generation of Corvette, I think it would be beneficial to have a single area that is dedicated to this topic.

I think that the "experts" would tend to monitor postings in this specialized area and our forum members would end up getting better advice. I have seen this happen on other forums. Right now, with this topic mixed around in the C1/C2, C3, C4, C5 and C6 forums, I think many of our knowledgable members are not seeing the questions. Plus, the questions tend to get buried down the list quickly in the busy generation forums.

What do ya'll think? Do you agree or disagee?

Could be a good idea, but I've only been watching the board for about a month and it seems like most of the questions result from a failure to use the search button.

In theory, I agree with it. In practice, however, I'm not sure. The argument is good to have a separate place where "experts" and those needing experts would go, be they from any generation of Corvette.

I think, however, that in my case I wouldn't go there too frequently. And then, as the "General Discussion" indicates for this C4 Forum, I would have missed out on at least one or two of JetJock's excellent "how-to's" on painting, prepping, etc. And JJ isn't the only thread, just the one I can think of right now.

Also, you get a lot of what seems to me to be very inexperienced people on this general forum asking about paint. Maybe it's better if they went to a specific "forum" for that information. And then again, maybe not. Because many of us have either had first hand experience, or have seen, watched, or been a part of body and paintwork to know the differences and nuances. Like everything, the "industry" has evolved from the days of real lacquer, imron, metal flake, fish scales, etc.

As the saying goes, plumbers don't necessarily have the best plumbing in the neighborhood, nor in this case, would the body and paint guys want to frequent ONLY the body and paint section. It's kinda boring to have to go do what you do all day long anyway, isn't it?

When I see an occasional, real expert in body and paint chime in, I take notice right away. I'm sure many of us do, too. Even experts can (and do) disagree, but I believe the whole level of education and understanding is raised for all of us when we read through some of these endless threads on "should-I-go-to-Maaco?" and "is-it-ok-if-I-get-my-Corvette-painted-for-$500?".

That's my two cents, and now I'm gonnna go rattle can them into titanium/platinum Corvette souvenir coins. Or some such....

And just for the record, I agree, but please don't ask me how I really feel

I have thought this for years. There is another excellent forum on Bodywork/Paint out there (the link is buried in my favorites somewhere), but no way does it get as much traffic as the CF, and it isn't Corvette specific.

You out there Frank ?

Haha, I just posted a bodywork question thread. So yeah, there's a demand for that sort of knowledge.

Probably a good idea. I work with SMC a bunch and there are many misconceptions working with it. We need to find who is an "ace" and be able to use their knowledge for our problems.

How about giving us a "top-ten" bullet list of smc do's/don'ts, right here, right now?

BTW, I think a body/paint section would be helpful, too.

I went ahead and did that last night and gave him the links to this thread as well as the ones to the same thread I posted in the C1/C2, C3 and C5 forums. He said he had already heard about it.

By the way, the response was overwhelmingly in favor of the idea in those other 3 forums as well as this one.

We have all had troubles after doing major mods. Engines, transmissions, chassis mods etc. The BIGGEST stress I have gone thru with my car was the paint job. I went to "the best" local shop as per rccommendations of local vette guys. I paid dearly and had lots of problems. I think smc specific advise is some of the most valuable info we can have here.
