Trick Flow L98 Head and Cam Kits
I notice that Summit Racing sells a couple of Trick Flow Kits (Alum Heads, Cam, Gaskets, seals , bolts, roller rockers etc.) that reportedly get the L98 to 350HP for Kit 1 and 400+ for Kit 2. $1600-$1700
Has anyone tried either of these mods?
Did you get the performance boost advertised?
What is the effect on emissions?
I have an 86 iron head L98 and I'm considering something like this mod for more power.

My GM mechanic buddy and his brother tried to persuede me into buying kit 1 for the $1600 out of Summit. We duscused it and I decided to keep the dough and invest it into another area for now. 350 hp is cool, but he did say that you had to adjust your stock TPI with a mod injection kit and get the exact specs for the cam and size of the heads. The other question was, would the cast iron block blow up with 350 hp? Maybe, who knows. Just buy the 330 hp "turn key" Chevy Sport engine for $4000 if you were to spend $1600-1700. Me, I'd just spend the $$$ for the completly put together, calibrated and tuned engine, but I ain't got the moola so I'll dream for now!

Here Goes
I know I'm looking for trouble here, but in reality, If you have the guts to go non computer, you can make serious HP w/ the basic L98 smallblock. I build/built various HP levels Mouse & Rat Motors, and the one thing that WILL shoot you in the foot is trying to stay within factory TPI / Computer parameters an getting serious HP. The C5 gang have a different type of SBC to deal with so they typically pull bigger HP numbers. You gotta make a decision if you will settle for a stock configuration or if you want to go for it, and move outside the box. IF you want instant satisfaction - go nitrous (IF your mill isn't tired & trans is in decent shape) You can save $$$ this way any maybe buy some time to think through the right approach for you.
