Default Tranny decides to take a dump in Maryland

I was driving home from Pax River Military base where i was visiting a high school buddy of mine. On the way home about 120 miles into the trip i was humming along interstate 95 doin about 75 and all of the sudden i start loosing power, the rpms start to pick up but the car is slowing down. So i mash the throttle the car goes back down to 2nd gear and pickes up speed again. When I let off the pedal i start to lose power again and the car will not maintain speed. I then discover that I no longer have 3rd and 4th gear. Just 1st and 2nd. So i was able to nurse the car home from A little past Baltimore. Back to the Philly suburbs in 2nd gear doin 45 the whole way. Not a fun ride. I hope somebody has seen this before. And it is a farliy cheap fix. I cant afford a new tranny right now.
Thanks for any help
Tony

The typical way that a c4 trans dies a slow death is to lose the 3-4 clutch pack. If this has happened(and I suspect it has), rebuild with a remanufactured torque converter is the permanent fix.

This is the same thing that happened to my 89. I took Pete K up on his suggestions to upgrade the rebuild with better parts. It cost me about $1850 for the rebuild and the tranny is so much better that the wife even noticed.

It does. Transgo make a nice kit for the electronic trans as well. Similar money as the 700 2&3 kit that is used in the non electronic transmissions. About $110 or so.

Our car ran normally or what seemed to be normal. All of a sudden it just crapped out.

When the 3-4 pack goes, it does it exactly as you described. No grinding, vibrating etc. 66k is low miles, but I have seen it before.

Looks like your 3/4 Clutch pack is burned up.
There is no easy fix. You will need a complete Tranny rebuild.

I have lost several 700R4's in various cars and they all went out without warning. A burned 3/4 clutch pack has to be the number 1 issue with the 700R4.

I read in a vette magazine(not sure which one)that the reason for the 3/4 clutch pkg failure is that drivers use the overdrive too often in city traffic. When in overdrive at low speeds, the tranny is constantly shifting between 4th and 3rd way too often, which burns out the clutches prematurely. For that reason,if I am driving in city traffic i keep it in 3rd gear, shifting into overdrive only when driving at speeds of 50 or above for sustained periods of time.

Our Vette only had 26,000 miles on it when it went out. Probably because it sat so much during the winter months when my father-in-law had the car. He put on 1,000 miles a year and we put on 15,000 in one year.
