Default manual fan switch

think of installing a manual fan switch in the 94. Is it worth getting the kit from Corvette Central, http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb....5Z5Z50000050F?

Not really running overly hot but there are times when I don't want the AC on and have to sit and idle. Would like the fans to come on before 230.

I just bought a toggle switch from radio shack, 16 gauge wire and a couple of crimp connectors and spliced it into the fan relays ground.

The hardest part was finding where to mount the switch but, I decided on a place under the dash right above my right leg. My "91" Vette temps are fine but, sometimes sitting in summer traffic I turn the fan on a little earlier.

I got the kit from Mid-America for the '86 as a Christmas gift. Will be installing it in the spring before the drag strip opens. Between a new water-pump, 180 thermostat and this, I'm hoping to be running cooler this year. I'm not planning on using it for daily driving use, just for when I run at the drag strip.

I mounted mine under the hood, The car rarely runs hot but if I get stuck in heavy summer traffic I just pull over and turn it on.

zaragoza - that's a very clean install, you may have just answered my question of where to install it.

Not really, like I said it's rarely used, I used once during a parade and a few times when I go down to the Jersey Shore.

For $20, I will burn a new eeprom for you changing the fan on/off to what you want.

GKK, What kind of toggle switch? Single pole single throw? and hook both grounds to a ground through the switch?

Yes, it's a SPST switch. All I did was tap into the ground wire from the fan relay.

One end of the new wire connects to the fan relay ground wire, the other end connects to one side of the new switch then connect another wire to the opposite side of the switch and ground the end of the wire to a bolt under the dash.

I just used heavy gauge wire and a toggle switch. It gets hot here in Houston in the summer, being able to turn the fan on early was all the difference in the world. It's also nice if you're waiting in staging lanes at the dragstrip or an auto-x.

I would say that I do not have a temp problems and run around 193-200 normally in Orlando where it is hot in summer. I never approach the 238* mark where the secondary fan kicks in normally. I have installed a aux fan switch to turn on the secondary fan when I wanted to. Like when getting stuck in traffic and exit ramps during rush hour. Sometimes at about 210*, I kick it on which prevents it from climbing and does take the temp down.

Hears how I did it for basicaly no money spent.

*** Use #473 wire

*** Relay wire connection shown

*** Ground wire and relay wire connection shown

Connect one wire from the switch to the dark blue wire #473. No need to cut wire, just skin back insulation and wrap around. This wire has 12 volts on it and is the return or low side of the relay coil. The other terminal of the relay coil has the 12 volts supplied from the fuse. The other wire from the switch goes to ground.

When the switch is closed, the coil of the relay will be energized and close the relay contacts starting the fan. This is the same process that the PCM does by grounding the #473 wire.

I elected to run the ground lead to a convenient point under the hood near the fan relay. I ran my wires into the car and hid it under the speaker enclosure to under the seat where all I have to do is to reach down and flip the switch on or off. Works great, been doing it for years.

Any kind of toggle switch will work and I used an encapsulated wire, 2 wires in one cable.
Best of luck.

That's $14.95 worth of nothing. Plus $7 shipping. Build your own. Can you say AutoZone.

I bought the manual switch from Corvette Central about two Years ago and love it. Any time I think the temp is get to high I just flip the switch. It is great. Highly recommend if you don't like your car running 200+......

And how are you planning on fitting that to a 94?? They dont have a removable eeprom.

Get someone to flash the ECM with new fan settings (you can do this as often as you like).

If you have a laptop and an ALDL cable, download your .bin from the ECM and email it to me, ill set your fan on and hysteresis settings for you and email it back.

Thanks everyone. I made my own manual fan switch kit that has a small red LED that illuminates when the fans are switched on. Real convient and can't miss that the fans are switched on manually.
