Default 84 Fuel delivery problems solved

I replaced the filter.....no change still almost ran. Removed the Fuel pump and found the hose connected to the fuel pump with a 1/4 " split in it, so it was pumping fuel back into the tank. Replacing the fuel pump anyway since I'm this far (with an 85 pump) no sense in being cheap and stupid.

good catch!!! This thread is a keeper for ALL C4 owners... especially as they age and these hoses start to break down.

Looked at three pumps, all had a slightly smaller dia than the original pump (fuel exit). Took a 5/16 dia hose softened by heat in water, slipped it over the exiting steel fuel line (3/8 Dia) and slipped the other end on the fuel pump (5/16 dia).

Running great no problems

I'm taking notes on this trick. Don't need a fuel pump now but when I do . . . I'll have it posted with the FSM!

Things like this is why I love this website

umm, I'm assuming you meant an 84 pump.

The TPI pump is a popular mod for the 84, so I'm pretty sure he ment a 85 pump.

Yep. He meant 85. The 85 pump offers no performance gain over a properly operating 84 pump, as the regulator on the rear throttle body will keep pressure at a maximum of 13 lbs, but if your pump is bad and you have to open the tank anyway, may as well get the upgraded pump. Costs about the same.

And yes, the pulsator hose eventually turns to mush. You can just replace it with a section of fuel injection hose.

With the 85 pump, and a piece of 5/16 dia hose the problem has been fixed. It's running fine, put over 400 miles since the repair.

Write down somewhere that you've used a different fuel pump, because if the regulator fails or you have injector problems, you'll go crazy troubleshooting.

I had the same thing happen, I was getting fuel to the filter, so I thought the pump was good. I went to alot of trouble to find out that little hose was deteriorated.

Common mod for the L83 (82 & 84) is to use an 85 pump.. You get a better fuel supply (Volume) to the regulator & injectors and better throttle response.
