L98 Torque Monster?
I keep hearing the L98 referred to as a "torque monster" .. and the LT1 a high rev'ing HP mill.... How can the L98 have more torque when the numbers say otherwise?!?!?
The L98 as I understand it was rated at 330 ft/lbs. whereas in 1992 the LT1 had 330 ft/lbs also? and in 1993 the LT1 had 340 ft/lbs... (10 more than the "torque monster")
Is it considered a torque monster because of when the L98 reaches its max torque rating (Lower in the RPM band)?
it dosent seem to make sense... Thanks

Re: L98 Torque Monster? (BluByU)
I believe that the L98 is 340FTLBs...I am looking at the plate for my dads 89. I personally don't know either why it is referred to that either. You are probably right about the torque curve being in the lower RPM range. I know when my 93 LT1 was stock, An L98 would pull me until I hit second gear and then GOODBYE!!!!

Yep the L98 gets all of its power down low, I've heard once you get to higher speeds it kinda dies. My LT1 on the other hand, I can punch it on the highway and it still pushes me back in my seat a bit :D As was stated, an L98 may have a slight edge from a dead stop for a lil while but then its like CYA

It could be 340.. I got the 330 off the website http://www.vette-net.com.. does anyone know for sure the torque ratings of the L98?
-=-=-= Update =-=-=-
Ok, I just went back to the site to check the numebrs.. the 330 ft/lbs was from the '85/'86 years.. then it went to 340 in '87 and then up to 345 or something ending the L98's in '91 with 350.. (basically) so I guess now the guestions is.. does the 10 ft/lbs really make that much of a differeance?!??!

Put it this way, when my car was put on the dyno in stock form.... it put 315.1 ft/lb of torque to the rear wheels. Calculate for 17% drivetrain loss and you get 379.63 ft/lb at the crank. Something tells me those #s weren't right in the books. :yesnod:
Purple is torque, orange is HP. And yes, it is dead by the time you are at 4800 RPM.

Does anyone have an LT1 Dyno chart from a stock LT1 for comparison??

Re: L98 Torque Monster? (scorp508)
well you have to remember that when the L98 came out, it was one of the most revolutionary designs and had more torque out of a small block than basically any other engine. I can barely touch the pedal and this thing goes, it accelerates well in the lower gears but dies up top. This car is made for streetlight driving to gun people off the line and hope they dont have more hp to beat you with in a straightaway. As you can tell, we L98 guys try to improve our hp to beat LT1's and other cars, we really dont need torque, just hp.

Some folks call it a "torque monster" because of the way it feels. Decent pull off idle to about 4500 RPM. The LT1/4 doesn't "feel" as torquey because it takes more pedal to get to the meat of the powerband. Having owned a couple of big block cars before, I have a hard time referring to an L98 as a monster.

Re: L98 Torque Monster? (ConeKLR)
So basically.. Scorps L98 (which we will use as an average for l98's) pulled about 315 rwtq and the LT1's basically pull 300-310 rwtq... sooooo.. there basically the same in torque... So it sems the 'feel' of the torque (SOTP) that has earned the L98 the title of torque monster of small blocks :).. (of course excluding Big Blocks) ... now my next quesiton.. we can see by scorps graph when the L98's max rwtq comes in.. does anyone have an LT1 graph showing when max torque for that mill comes in?

I have one of those ash tray cover plaques that says my 87 has 345 ft/lbs. I had her dynoed a few weeks ago and she pulled 333ft/lbs sae at the wheels. Alot of the more stock c5's were only getting 290's. I also get the jump almost every time at the 1/4 track against the C5 but they smoke by me in the upper rpm's. My power falls off around 4400 rpm.

Re: L98 Torque Monster? (BluByU)
My 1985 corvette sales manual says the L98 gets 330lb.-ft. @ 3,200 rpm. I've only driven mine a little as I do not hasa liscense yet and I'm still working on it but from the little I did drive it has quite a punch when you hit the pedal. I once drove my brother's old '95 when I was even younger and I don't recall it feeling as punchy, the L98 is a pretty good engine for its age, I don't plan on doing any real racing with it so it suits me just fine, my 85 is plenty car for the money. The thing I miss most in an older model C4 is the front end of the newer model and the updated interior.

All I can say is, the L98 is a great engine with a lot of room for improvement especially in the breathing department.
