I drove a nice 89 C4 Vert this afternnoon that I'm contemplating buying. I noticed a couple times when going from 1st to 2nd the shifter wanted to slide over to 4th instead of 2nd. When I tried to correct it there was resistance and a slight grind insued (nothing bad).
Is that a shifter issue or something internal to the tranny. I drive nothing but sticks so I don't think it's the driver in this case.....could be....but not likely!
The car otherwise seems very healthy and immaculate for an 89.
Sounds to me like the CAGS has not yet been disconnected. One way to tell would be to see if it wants to shift 1 to 4 under hard acceleration, or at greater than 20 MPH. Normal CAGS would allow a smooth upshift, if not there may be a linkage or transmission issue.
Sounds like CAGS (Computer-Aided Gear Selection) - I'm not sure what year they introduced it. At a certain combination of RPM or speed, you are forced to shift from 1st to 4th (real annoying), and can damage the transmission if you try to shift into another gear. A light should appear on the dash at this time, also. There's a $30 gizmo you can buy to defeat this "feature".
I had forgotten about that feature in the 6-speed. Never owned a corvette 6-speed myself, but I do remember reading some threads with that feature in them. I feel less concern now. Thanks for the education.

When attempting to shift into 2nd from 1st, if you're experiencing more of a resistance than a slide, it could be the synchro gear needing replacement. When the synchro gear needs replacement, the telltale signs are grinding and difficulty shifting into the problematic gear. It's not a cheap fix. If the seller is a dealer, tell the salesman you want it repaired. If it's a private sale, make sure you knock off at least $500 from the asking price. It could very well require more money to take care of this problem, if it's the synchro.

I hear what you are saying. But if he attempted to go back into first after CAGS pushed him to 4th. There could be a normal grind because he didn't double clutch it to get the syncro's in line.
Since this is a thread I started, maybe an unrelated question will be tolerated. Same car! Has anyone ever seen an 89 Convertible with cloth seats. I have no idea if they are factory or not?
Yes my 94 had that dam skip shift. What a pain. I ordered a pcm from PCMFORLESS had the skipshift programmed out,had the fans programmed to turn on at 210, and a performance tune. Lower temp allowed more timing. much faster throttle response on the pcmforless. I kept the stock pcm to switch back and forth. There was a difference.
