Default 84-89 Instrument Panel Bulbs?

I picked up the replacement light bulb kit from MidAmerica for the 4 bulbs that go in the speedometer/tachometer area. They sent me 4 halogen bulbs, but the ones in the car are 7073's (look identical to 194 bulbs). The halogen bulbs that were sent have a base on them, instead of the wedge-type that are in the dash. Does anyone know if the 194's would be fine to use? Figure, since I have the car apart, I'd rather replace the bulbs now. Thanks.

Dont use 194's! It'll damage your dash from the heat they generate. The correct bulb is a 882 and they're expensive as all get out. Dealership was the only place that carried them in stock and they wanted $25 a bulb! I just ordered some from Advanced for like $7 a piece.

The 882's are the ones that MidAmerica shipped to me, but they are not the same as the ones in the dash now. The ones in my dash are 7073's, which are a blade type bulb, like the 194's. That is what I am confused about.

'89 uses those blade type halogens, '84-'88 use the bi pin style. Sounds like they sent you the wrong ones.

This is an 882

Nope, not that bulb either, that is in my car. Guess I'll have to take a picture of it and post the picture. The bulb looks almost identical to the 194's, just the inner element is different.

Well you've got an '86 so I know the 882 will work in it. The '89 uses a wedge shaped base 7073 and yes it does look like a 194 bulb but the filament is different. I do know that the 194's run hot and i've been told not to put them in my dash (they make a wedge and bi pin 194). I dont understand why you have that in your '86 unless someone replaced the dash cluster or something.

Don't know why it is different, either. But, it definitely has the 89 bulbs in it (7073's). Thanks.

(i post this information about every 6 months or so - ditch the 882's)

on my 85, i replaced my 882's with these -

go to:

http://www.lightbulbsdirect.com/page...XXenon/X5G412V

a whole lot cheaper, longer life, cooler, and just as bright. i've had them for about 2 years now without issues. c5's and c6's use xenon in their dash assemblies.

Went ahead and ordered the pack from Mid America for the 1989 dash cluster, as the bulbs in mine are # 7073. Thanks Demonic for the heads up!

The 194 is a general use automotive incadencent bulb. GM uses them extensivly in dash applications. The bulbs in the DIC are 194s. 882s are halogen and generate bunches of heat. Will burn the mount and circuit board. Joe C has the best solution.

As much as I hate Walmart, I found the 882's on a peg there at 2 different Walmarts. Prices were cheap so I snagged up a handful of them.

I used the BP891s at Napa.....

They are too bright and hot. The Speedo starts to show up near the 85mph mark when I've been driving for a while. It gets hot and the black moves out of the way.

What I had to do was put a small piece of wadded up paper in the light sensor hole to make the dash dim a bit. Since then, I haven't had any heat build up.

To understand what I am talking about, just place your finger over the sensor and watch your lights dim.

I plan to:
A) get the other bulbs
B) Cut a small lens from cheap sunglasses and place it over the sensor.

When I had my "84" dash rebuilt by Southern Electronics, if I remember correctly ? There was a tag on it saying something like " DON'T INSTALL 882'S ASSHAT, LEAVE THE 194'S IN"

Although the 882's worked in my 86 Monti and the Cherokee with no problems

Yes these are too hot for the cluster. Need to be 5 watts not 7 watts...Get them out of the cluster..
