Perhaps not the answer you were looking for and not the most fun thing to spend money on, but the Factory Service Manual is a great investment if you haven't already purchased one.
You can learn a lot about the car, you will need it eventually , it can save you plenty in repairs and will help when you do begin modifications.

My advice would be to buy the car some wax, maybe claybar the paint, change the fluids and filters, and then just drive it for a while. It will tell you what it needs.
And buy that FSM, best money you can spend on the car.

1. Exhaust
2. Air lid modification
3. Tune up and set timing (advance a couple degrees)
4. Look up "free mods" in the search function and it will give you all the small free things to do
5. get rid of the frisbee
6. Start with the heavy mods (intake, cam, heads, etc)

I was pretty much in the same boat as you're in now a few months ago.

#1 and 2 are the quickest things to do and also have the most immediate results.

After that I went after the overall looks...replaced the faded emblems, replaced worn weatherstripping, clay/polish/wax the paint. A good tune never hurts.

Don't forget the FSM!!

Here is a good summary of the C4's tuneup specs. This is a good place to start.

You can fill in the specific part #s for your year. The far right column is for the date and mileage that you completed the tuneup work.
