Good luck, post back here if you have any questions. Even with the costs of the wrench, torx screwdriver or socket, timing light, and even with a bottle of antisieze, you'll still come out over top of what it would cost you at a shop. And then you still have all those tools for future use! It quickly becomes an addiction.

If the DIY route does not work for you, Galles Chevrolet looked to be a nice operation - The owner races Corvettes and supports local Corvette clubs

Thanks, I am just trying to pay it forward to the forum for all that you guys have helped me with over this past year! I see the threads on the forum and realize that, unfortunately, not everyone is as technologically-inclined as my generation, so I do my best to include pictures and videos where useful.

I can say I've learned almost everything I know about this car from the forum and my FSM. I figured if I didn't know how to do it, there were others out there who didn't either.

-Jonathan

P.S. If you thought that was detailed, wait for my intake gasket/injector/water pump replacement thread!

Keep it up,
Maybe one of the mods will put up a tech sticky someday for detailed posts like yours

Okay so take a knife or a scribe of some sort and with the engine OFF mark the timing tab at the 6 degree BTDC mark. Be sure as we mentioned before to paint the slot(timing mark) on the harmonic balancer. Then just line up the shiny part with the painted part as they look under the timing light.

Be SURE your timing control connector is disconnected.

If that didn't help please just be more specific in what you are haveing trouble with and we'll get you through it

Scotty's Southwest Corvettes is the ONLY place to take your vette for anything. Plus, you get to hang out and check out all the other generations of vettes he has in the shop.

He's on Girard, north of Candelaria.

I agree. If the OP cannot set the timing with those instructions, he needs a mechanic. Any competent mechanic can set base timing in his sleep.

...nothing shows when i set the light to it....very frustrating.
I'm assuming that:
-the pickup is clipped onto #1 spark plug wire
-the light flashes at idle
-you can see the timing indicator bracket when the light flashes
-you cannot see the marker on the damper at idle when the light flashes

Did you open the connector in the Tan/Blk wire that comes out of the large harness between the dist and the brake booster?

Correct:
Pickup is clipped
Light flashes
Can see the indicator bracket
Tan/Blk wire is disconnected
I CANNOT see the marker (marked hash mark) when the light is flashing

Please HELP

Can you help yourself a little more by turning the harmonic balancer till you can see the mark, swipe a line of white paint in the groove, wipe the excess off? Maybe that might make it easier for you to see the mark?

I marked it with a white pencil, but ugh, still not seeing it. if i could find a long enough paint brush or figure out a way to bubba rig one i'd do the paint, but i just can't get paint down there the way i did the white pencil.

Have you tried turning the distributor until you can see the mark?
