Put the old '95 on the dyno at a performance shop yesterday.Best $75.00 and two hours I have spent in a long time.Car checked out good,A little over 300hp, and reached maximum torque at about 400 rpm below factory specs.the guy gives me a couple of options.#1:heads and cam, lifters ect.$4,500.00 about 60 additional horsepower.#2:supercharger and associated work $5,500.00 and a 50 to 60% gain in horsepower. He said to keep in mind that we are dealing with an automatic which will take 500hp, and a rear end that will take 650hp.and that any mods I make will decrease the overall value of the car,as it will no longer be stock. He has an excelent repertation, and stands behind his work fully.I know several people who have dealt with him and he is good. But it seamed like he was trying to talk me out of modifing my car.He said take the money I was going to pay him,put a little more with it and get a 6 speed C5, play with it a while and then bring it to him and he could make it really go.What do you think?mod really nice C4, or go to a C5?
Totally depends on your objective!
If you want a custom/personalized Vette that will spank a new run of the mill C5, and any typical C4 you may encounter then modify your car and make it special. If you are concerned about return on investment from a strictly $$ perspective, then don't do anything to your car except sell it and buy the C5. However, if you do as the mechanic suggests, and drive the C5 for a while and then bring it back to him to trick out, you will be faced with the same dilema again. Put money into the C5 that you will never recover, or leave it stock.
Is having an 11-12 second car important to you? Or, is a 13 second car that's built better, runs smoother and quieter and is more reliable more important? Totally up to you!
As you can see from my sig I went the way of customizing the C4. I have a one of a kind, custom vert that will make short work of all but the most exotic, or most customized cars on the street. I can take it to a show and not have to worry about having a whole line of cars just like it.
I'm in somewhat of the same situation myself. The modification route is tempting. You can improve the car way beyond stock, but you stand the chance of a maintenance headache. You could also go C5. That is going to cost around $30K+.
In the end, whatever you chose will be a winner as long as you have a Vette.
I guess I'm going to Supercharge.I like my car,and have alredy spent considerable money on brakes, rotors, tires, exhaust, plugs and wires, ect.only drive 4 or 5k a year.Car will never see the strip,I just want a step above the norm if you know what I mean.I was told the supercharger would go on the stock engine no problems and would do a good job.Plus the supercharger could be removed and go on another C4.My car is just about paid for and I hate to start over with nickle dime stuff on another used car :yesnod:
