Default Early C4's and long distance roadtrips

What is the longest distance road trip anyone has driven their (84-87) Vettes in the past few years? I am planning on driving my 85 from Pittsburgh to Bowling Green, KY. and back this summer. It's in excellent shape with very low mileage and I will have it gone over before I go, but should I expect any problems on a drive of about 1100 miles?

I've heard of longer trips in a C4. It's just a car. Make sure that all the normal pre-trip inspection stuff is good to go, like you'd do on any other car, and it should be fine.

i've done several 2000+ mile (round trips) in my 85 without issues - akron ohio to bar harbor maine - twice, and once to spearfish, SD. this summer, i'm planning the "corvettes in the rockies" event in my 90. i've done many 1000 mile treks, again, without issues. enjoy the ride...

I put about 6k on our 85 last summer when we went to cruise in IX. That was our vacation so it was a wandering trip on the way home via parts of RT66. The only problem we had was the roof cracked sitting overnight in a camp ground. It's just a car like stealthLT4 said. Just do your normal inspections.

Well ive driven a 91 from Houston to Phoenix and a 96 from Tennessee to Phoenix. I have to agree with the others. A Cars a car and normal maintenance procedures apply.

I had an ’86 auto coupe that I had done 1,000 mile road trips in several times. No problems. Only thing I wish I would've had back then was an iPod to take along to plug into the Bose sound system.

Like any car, give it a thorough preflight check before you head out.

Default Solo?

If you have a friend with you, that potential breakdown will make the trip more exciting.

First trip with our 84 was from Flint MI. to northern Ontario, between 450 & 500 miles, no problems. We have made several trips south to the Toronto area without problems( approx. 300 mi).. Only close to a major problem was a failed TPS but that was quickly found and fixed..

It does have the factory optioned heavy duty cooling sytem in it. It doesn't appear to have any leaks and does not overheat but I will change all the hoses first.

I plan on taking my 88 to CI X right out of unheated storage. New Hampshire to Nashville. Normal pre-trip checks and AAA.

Saline, Mi. and back (1600 miles round trip) last summer. Twice back and forth to Tampa, Fl. (approx. 3000 miles round trip) in the last five years. 80 miles per day commuting, Every day.

On a car now showing 270K on the clock, not all bad.

I have yet to find another car with seats that are as "all day" comfortable as my '85 C4 - with the Standard seats. If the thing was somewhat Quieter inside at highway speeds it would be even Better for those long trips

I look forward to trippin in the Vette. Makes it easy to dodge road kill, blown tires etc.
Suggest slowing down a bit when it rains.
If your SO needs 28 changes of clothes & a like # of shoe pairs for a 7 day get away suggest shipping the items to your destination.

If "traveling to Bowling Green this summer" means the National Corvette Caravan then you will be in the company of hundreds of fellow Corvette enthusiasts like yourself, any or all of which will be willing to help you if anything should go wrong with your ride. Have a great time!

Damn, that is a lot of miles on your car. And I thought I had a lot of miles on my 93 TA at 186,000 on the non rebuilt motor and tranny. My 86 C4 only has 52,000 miles but I did have to replace one head gasket. Has your 270,000 motor or tranny been rebuilt?

My 91 has 61900 miles on it now, does not seem high but that is because it came to Sweden when it was one or two years old.
We made a round trip to the Netherlands a few times (since I come from the Netherlands) and that is 600 miles one way to my birthplace.
So 1200-1300 miles round trip the first time, the second time we drove a different route to let off and pick up our dog (german shepherd, picture that in a vette with our bags and stuff), you can guess we have a coupé instead of a vert.
That second time was a 1900-2000 mile round trip.
Zero problems with the car, have to mention that the second time was in Feb-March last year on summer tires.
Thought winter was over and the prohibition (?) of studded winter tires in Germany and the Netherlands, made me use my summer tires.
Really cool, coming back to Sweden just to find out it had started snowing again in the south of Sweden.
I learned to ease on the gas pedal the last 400 miles.
Mileage on those trips was arround 25-26 with aprox 900 miles of german autobahn and danish motorways (comparable to US Interstate) but only did 95ish mph on those.
Can be pretty tight traffic at times.
