I have the same issue with the windows on my 93. I believe it is the anti-rattle door window bumpers but this has yet to be confirmed. Check the link below for more information:

If the scratches are not too deep, they can be buffed out. This page has more info on removing scratches from auto glass:

It's usually the pads on the outer door seals that cause the problem. As far as I know the window can't be fixed, it needs to be replaced. For some reason, the newer C4's (90up) seem to have more of a problem with it. I know I've gone through a lot of them on the LT1 cars.

Same thing on my 93. It must be the anti rattle bumpers, the scratches are right where the front pad is shown in the Ecklers diagram. Thanks

I just got some new ones I'm going to install soon.
the scratches "are" where the rattle felts ride...my old ones are flattened out from age and feel hard as a 2x4 to the touch.

probably just havent used the drivers window as much! The felt pads wear out and harden over time, causing scratches. It is a PITA to open up the door panels and change them out, but needed to keep from scratching the glass. This will happen in ANY car over time BTW; my 01 Audi is getting some scratches on the drivers window already.

My '96 has the same issue. Any advice on removing the door trim panel? Most instructions say "lower door glass" first, but it seems like that would simply put the window in the way of where I need to work. Can the glas be moved aside once the trim panel is off? (Obviously, I've never gone into the door before.)
Thanks in advance for any tips.

I replaced the front one on the passenger side last year, easy fix. Just unbolt the old one and bolt in the new , uses one bolt, and may need to adjust a bit , only took 1/2 hour tops. Driver side may take a little longer, more door parts to remove...WW

This seems to be a common issue. My '93 drivers window has scratches, I can tell it's from the outer window felt seal. The seal is really hard and pieces are broken off that line right up with the scratches. I have new outer felt seals for both doors (original GM parts) but I haven't installed them yet. I may replace the driver's window someday, but I don't plan on doing it anytime soon.

I have the same problem on the drivers side.I have new felts to install. Glad I work for a Auto Glass Company.
Be careful with buffing Curved tempered glass, If it gets to hot it will explode!!

I too thought it was my outer door seals and I replaced them on both doors. Took about 45 minutes. I thought everything was golden until I rolled my window back up and it still sounded like nails on a chalkboard. Hence the reason I suspect the anti rattle door window bumpers.
