5 hp by changing mufflers?
Hey all, according to this link ( http://corvetteactioncenter.com/spec...88/88prod.html ) the L98 got an extra 5 hp in '88 because of new mufflers, but it says they didn't put these new mufflers on verts because of "noise restriction". Honestly I can barely hear the exhaust on my '88 and I certainly wouldn't mind it being louder. Would simply swapping to the coupe's mufflers really give me 5 hp? If so it seems like a no-brainer. I like the stock look so I really don't want to change the original exhaust tips if I can avoid it but I do want to be able to hear my engine - any advice appreciated.

Get aftermarket mufflers..Wide variety for dirt cheap.
Flowmasters are LOUD
Corsas have no drone but are pricey
Magnaflow is a good ground
F*ck all the knock off/generic ****!
Upgrade to LT1 mufflers to keep stock sound but better flowing.

I have the "monza" mufflers on my 85, they have a lot of drone but I like the sound. I don't drive the corvette to listen to the radio.

the reason that different mufflers wil "add hp" is because your current mufflers are more restrictive compared to other units and adding different mufflers that are less restrictive will add a small amount of power. you'll have to decide what sound is most appealing to you. do some research and compare units. fwiw, i have muffler eliminators on my 84. the sound is great! it drones a tiny bit but i love the sound so its an acceptable trade off!

Put Corsas on my 89 A4 with the L98. Look stock except great chrome tips that align perfect. Smoother acceleration due to less restriction. Great interior sound, NO res. and just enough rumble on the outside to let people know its a sports car.
As to your original question, yes an upgrade to a less restrictive exhaust could add 5HP. The stock 88-89 have only 1 functioning outlet whicle some upgrades have the second outlet function at higher revs.

You may get 5 horses at the crank.

If you look at the link, it says that the difference in mufflers was in part due to the difference in gear ratio between the coupe and convertible. At cruise speeds, there would have been enough of a difference in RPM that the exhaust note would have been louder or the interior resonance would have been much higher.
Going to a different design muffler would solve that and in doing so, changed the HP output because of better flow through the new muffler. So installing the coupe mufflers on the 'vert would "add" that 5HP, but the difference in the sound (good or bad) would be noticeable.
When I had my '92 vert, I bought one of the early sets of the B&B TriFlow 3" systems. The car sounded great but there was a nearly unbearable interior resonance with the top up or down when the engine was at 1400-1600 RPM which was freeway cruise speeds. Installing the factory hardtop helped a bunch, but I could still hear it.
Going with a full "cat-back" aftermarket exhaust system will provide more of a power gain than just installing the 88 coupe mufflers alone. Given the various systems available, you should try to listen to as many different systems as you can before buying one.

I have been planing to change my stock mufflers for something with a little sound, but I do not want it to over ride my radio. But do want some good sound. I have only 12,200 miles on my vert. any ideas ??
