Default drag racing help

I`ve got an 87 auto that I raced last weekend and managed a time of 15.5 seconds with the tyres spinning a quater of the way down the slippery concrete airfield. I`ve since got new tyres and it grips so much better. My question is about the gear change. Should I just go for it in drive or lauch in 1st then shift to 2nd then drive or launch in 2nd then to drive?

Also what kind of stress does burnouts and racing have on the gear box? The other day while driving home it wouldn`t shift past 2nd and felt like what a manual does with a slipping clutch for about 10 minutes. Then it shifted to 3rd and 4th and has worked fine since????

Thanks

Oh yeah I should add I had never been on a drag strip before and nearly got lost hence the slow time.

Go to the drag racing section and you'll find tons of info.

When I race my '93, I leave it in 3rd or "D", not 4th or "OD"

Let the trans shift itself, you won't do any better trying to manually shift it.

Don't do a massive burnout if your running street tires. Just spin them enough to clean the tread off. I usually drop my tire pressure to 25lbs.
As soon as the last yellow comes on, I take off.
Don't forget to have fun.

with both above. Don't burn out on street tires. Leave in D not the over drive D. If your transmission is hanging up...you will probably have problems in the near future. Check your trans fluid level, color and smell. Does it smell burnt? Discolored?

Just a couple of tips for your next time at the track. Leave the spare time home. Run with 1/2 tank or less. Drop tire pressure to 25 or less for the rear tires. Pump up the front tires to about 40 psi. Try advancing the timing from stock 6 degrees to 8-10 degrees. You can also reset the TPS to .60 instead of the standard .54. Make sure the air filter is clean. Do a search on MODS that work...... cut air filter box. Are the plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor all in good shape?

Just go out and have fun and enjoy the car.

I had an 89 vert I ran all the time at the strip, start in d and prepack with the brake on and let the car shift automatically and you will find it peobably will shift at 4800 rpm.\, max torque range

If you do everything right, it should run very low 14s.
