Default C4 1989 auto-trans will not shift into 3,4,or overdrive

2 months back I noticed that shifting into 3rd and 4th was getting sluggish.
Now 1st and second shift perfectly 3rd it just high revs. Reverse works also.
I've pulled the trans pan down and there was the usual dark film on the pan itself, no filings of metal. I changed the filter and installed new gasket and new trans fluid and it still revs up when it shifts into 3rd.
What needs to be looked at.

Sorry to say that is the same problem I had and it is now rebuild time.

Let me give you the benefit of my experience and tell you DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES SWAP YOUR TRANNY OUT with a regular (rebuilt) GM 700R4! Get the original rebuilt by a qualified shop. I had mine replaced with a race tranny that was built on just a regular GM 700R4 and it does not behave the same as the vette tranny did. As Pete K. will tell you there are significant differences in the internals of the vette 700R4. So please do not repeat my mistake.

I was just wondering, what mileage was on your car?
Mine had 114,000 miles on it when it bit the dust.
1 , 2 shift and slipping in 3 & 4.
oddly enough the same thing happened to my Mustang AT C4, right around 100,000 they start to fade i guess.

I agree with the rebuilding but I dont see how the rebuilding your original will be much different from a rebuilt 700r4 when the internals will most likely be replaced not repaired.
If you mean the type of internals used than i can understand that.

Yes the internals, but things like the servos are different, so if it is out of an f-body that is one of the differences.

I'm going through it right now myself, should have the car back this week. three four clutch pack was slipping, third and fourth gear shattered into about a millions little bits and impacted the lower gears and clutch packs, so now I've got a whole new transmission rebuild coming home.

Good Luck with the repairs!

you MUST rebuild and change EVERYTHING
you can't reuse the original 1st and 2nd packs
if you are going to replace, replace everything
because if you replace 3rd and 4th clutch packs only
1st and 2nd will fail anytime !!!

I'm borrowing this thread a bit. Is this possibly to DIY to rebuild a tranny? I got the same thing, revving and not going into 3rd gear. 1st, 2nd and reverse work perfectly.

Yes. It takes some ingenuity because you'll need to make your own specialty tools.

Much might depend on 1. your location, 2. talent of the shop/builder and 3. is the transmission original and "untouched" in the car now.

What year is yours - makes a difference I believe!!!

YEAR IS VERY IMPORTANT - VERY! YOURS IS?

Now the car is back again on the tyres running smooth! I took out the gearbox (gave me som extra job when all six bolts went off where the exhaust connects to the manifold) and found a local guy who rebuilt the transmission and now it's back and running really nice!

Thanks guys for help and inputs!

Default GL460e

Why is a "high performance" car (C4 Corvette's) having so much trouble with the 3-4 clutch pack in a GL460E. Did G.M. drop the ball on its engineering? Thanks for an you opinions, just spent $3000.00 on better than stock rebuild which should not of happened at only 80k
