Only in 1996 models...if it's a 6 speed standard, 1996 model, it's an LT4.

Wrong. Not from the factory at least.

Yes.6speed lt1's from 92-95.Maybe 96 as an option??Every manual trans 96 I have seen is an LT4.
LT4 was an option on 97 trans am/z-28 also.Very rare but was available.

Any factory ordered 96 with a manual, got the LT4. If you find a 96 LT1 with a manual, then somebody changed something over at some point.

The f-bodies with the LT4 were done by SLP, if I remember correctly. Only a couple hundred made.

LT4's also have an 8,000rpm tach (6,300rpm redline) compared to LT1 6,000rpm tach (5,700rpm redline).

As others have mentioned, all manual trans '96 cars were LT4

6-speed = LT4
Auto = LT1

No auto tranny LT4 cars, unless they've been converted.
And there are a few of them out there. One forum member here has one.

If you want to prove if a '96 is a factory LT4, look at the 8th character of the VIN.
P = LT1
5 = LT4

Everything above is correct. Red intake manifold, 8k tach, Vin 5. 6spd in 1996=LT4.

A few things to add to the list:

Under car
- Stock LT4 exhaust systems have a crossover tube on the exhaust. Look just ahead of the spare tire carrier. LT1 did not receive the crossover tube

Engine compartment
- remove engine oil fill cap
- LT4 should be stamped into the head (may need a flash light to see it)

If you’re looking for a LT4, enjoy the hunt!

I notice mine by how much faster it is than the LT-1...Ha. Also if you look under the oil cap you can see the different rocker arms.

LT4 came stock with Crane sourced 1.6 roller rockers IIRC.

All LT4 optioned cars came with the ”Grand Sport” TB cover – regardless if it was a GS or a CE.

Easiest and surest way is too look inside the oil fill cap, LT4 will be clearly stamped right in the center
