The earlier ZF trans had straight cut gears which produced a bit more noise. The later ZF had helical cut gears which were quieter but not quite as strong. The early were rated to 450 ft lbs while the lter were at 400 ft lbs. Either one will do the job for a long time.
As for the FW. Some people get away with using a die grinder with a scuffing pad to 'rough up' the surface just a little bit with a new clutch. I did this with my 90 model with no issues at 90k miles. My biggest concern would be age on the flywheel and clutch componenets at this point. Carolina clutch offers a setup that uses a single mass FW. Its still much lighter than the stock 38lb flywheel and provides some dampening of sound. This is the route I would go on a replacement.
