Wow 8 mpg, I'm getting more than twice that in city driving and averaging 21 combined city and highway. I think I would be looking for the cause of that problem.

Stop and go traffic?

How are you measuring the mpg it gets?

My car is carb'd (I bought it that way) and I still get around 20-23 highway. 12-15 city.

I zero my trip odometer fill it up, then drive. Once I have driven for a few days, i refill. Simple.
Problem is 3.75 gears, 2800 rpm stall and a high horsepower 396LT1, and my right foot.

Does a high stall kill MPG?
Mine has 2800 stall Pete k. Torque converter. 3.07 gears.
can't keep the right foot of enough to get a real gauge of MPG.

Not sure of the split, but I get a combined 18MPG. I think the 6 speed will improve that quite a bit.

I get about 18 mpg overall with my LS3 hot cam crate engine, 700r4 and 3.73 gears. I actually improved my mpg going with this new engine over my old LT1.

I think I am going to find a C4 with a 6 speed, and use it to bring over the 396. The Vette has 144000 miles, so interior needs work and car needs paint. I think I can find a sweet Rubie 6 speed for less than 10k, and use mine as a parts car. I know if I changed gears it would help significantly , but the grin factor would be there. Besides, I would like to start rowing gears.
I get 17 highway.

My 85 with a 6 speed (not the 4+3) gets 27 highway and about 17 city. I'm pretty heavy with the gas though, L98 with nothin special here.

How does it pull with the 2.59 gears? I was thinking 3.08's, but people recommended against, even though I have a 396 with 425 ft/lbs tq to the wheels and very flat torque curve.

Off the line not where I want it to be, but once it reaches 1600 rpms, its a rocket..Im thinking seriously about getting 3:07s for a better hole shot but I really hate to screw with this kind or gas mileage. Im not a racer anymore, Im a cruiser, but I still like my cars fast...D....WW
