Took my 1985 to the track this past SUNDAY...
Just wanted to share some videos and photos of my 85 and Me at the track this past Sunday.
A friend was taking his Chevelle out on its maiden voyage (new motor) at some "UTI FUN DAYS" event at Maple Grove Raceway, and I decided I would join with the Vette for some bracket racing....
I gotta tell you, the first pass, let me know the car was not happy, I was hearing the motor rattling as I went down the track, and it clearly was not giving me all that it had.....
On street tires, my first pass was a 15.519 at 86.40mph..... and I was huffing some oil on the way down......
I made a second time pass, and did nothing different and she got a lil quicker, huffing less smoke and rattling a little less, with a 15.46 at a slower 85.64mph.....
So as the first round of elimitations came around, as those of you familiar with bracket racing are, I dialed it in at an average "ish" , 15.49, figuring, it was getting warmer out and the car would get slower.....
Well, I lined up against an 11 second mustang, and I had the head start.... The vette felt even stronger! It pulled, barely smoked, and was banging through the gears HARD...... It even stopped rattling..... THEN.... I saw the other guy got the win lights. Why do you ask?????
BECAUSE I went even faster, with a 14.995 et @ 88.70mph.... HAHA, so I lost first round, but in my mind.... I totally won!
I did a little google searching and found the majority of sites say the 1985 TPI Corvette was good for a 14.1, 25 years ago....... And Im not even sure if that was stick or auto, however, with my 255lb 6'4" self in the car, I can not complain about a 14.99 after all these years of "abuse."
Im no stranger to fast cars, my other car is a 1996 Camaro with a stroked LT1 (385ci) with a procharger and intercooler, however, ripping around in the Vette, was SO MUCH FUN.... just a few pics, and some vids if I can post em.....

Thats what I had written right? You were just pointing out that it was stick....
If Im correct you gotta admit, an Auto only that much slower after 25 years (also stock) is pretty good....

When I took my 85 to the track for the first time....had never been before and no modifications it was a blast. Didn't know where the 1/4 ended and kept going......made the third exit!! I had 140,000 on the engine at that time and was turning 14.6 with the stock automatic. A few modifications later and I had it down to 14.1. I then changed only pulleys (going to the March underdrive) and unbolted the cat and replaced it with a straight through pipe I built and dropped .5 seconds hitting 13.6 at the track. I was shocked to say the least at those times.
So if you want a little more out of her...drop the cat for the track.

Ive been drag racing since I was 16, even went through a full out race bike..... but, this was prob the most fun... No rowing the gears, no worrying about falling, and if it broke.... well.... Id make it better! Thank You!

Thank You... when I was 16, I raced in an event called the HIGH SCHOOL CHALLENGE. It was my first time down the track. A good friend of mine told me.... If you wait to see green you are to late. He said to me, that I should watch the yellows, and when I see the 3rd yellow, DUMP IT! It always worked for me. DO NOT anticipate the 3rd yellow, go for it when you see it. Now as an Accident re constructionist, it makes even more sense.
The average human, takes 1.6 seconds, from the time they see something, actually perceive it and make the decision to react, then allow the body to react, then.... add in the cars delay as well. That 1.6 seconds is shortened, because unlike an accident which is unexpected, the lights are expected, so being prepared, again shortens that time. Sorry for the TECHNICAL, but if I can give you any advice, Ill keep it simple....

Maybe you have an exhaust restriction due to a partially plug catalyst or no spark energy/fuel pressure. It should bang out 14.5's with a lackluster launch or a mistake. My old 5 liter TPi all steel camaro could muster that with 230 hp plus an exhaust so i'd look into that.
15.40's? I had a 6000 lb regular cab 4x4 F250 Powerstroke diesel that could run that at 87-88 mph. something is amiss- you will be thrilled when you find out what.
