unable to unlock doors with the key on my 1987
my key will not unlock either door on my 1987.
I posted this yesterday, and got some replies but apparently I was told to post it in the C4 section, which is what I thought i did. I am a new member so bare with me. We are trying to reset the factory alarm. We were told to lock the door then unlock with the key, to disable it. If anyone has any other ideas as to how to disable the factory alarm, I would greatly appreciate it.
thanks...

Does your key turn in both outside door lock key cylinders?
If no.........you will need new locks or your locks re-keyed to other car keys.
If yes......then you have a mechanical malfunction with door lock linkage etc.
You will need to get above items working and/or corrected and then move on to alarm system electronics.

Pretty unusual for both door locks to not work. ARe you sure you are using the correct key? The door lock key is oval in shape and that's a common design for GM keys.
The door key should also lock the console glovebox and the rear storage bin. Does it work there??

As c4cruiser asked, does it work in the console? What exactly happens, does the key turn, but the doors do not unlock? Or will the key not turn? Did it ever work? Is this a brand new (to you) car?

sounds like they have constant power to the lock function but the lock function on their aftermarket pke system wont de-energize. if they arent planning on using it they could pull the fuse, may just be a bad relay or if they didnt install it , faulty installation. I dont remember an 87 with either pke or factory alarm, could be wrong though, CRS is a wonderful invention

looks like I fibbed, very sorry, there is a factory system, how bout , move the inside door switch to the unlock position, then try your key on the outside to lock and then unlock the door, there also is a switch for it , as soon as I find it on 'my' 87' I'll post again

Is the problem that the doors won't unlock from the outside, or that the key won't deactivate the alarm? There is a switch on the lock mechanism for the alarm, there is a link on it to unlock the doors. If the doors used to unlock, but now they don't, and it's both doors, that must be a key problem or someone has messed with the locks. The reason I suggested you post here is your question would get a lot more exposure.

Strange it would happen to both doors. You are going to have to pull the door panel to fix. Look down in the corner of the rear of the window with a light, and you should be able to see it with the panel on, the mechanism (window down). The latch rod is connected with a plastic retainer onto a bellcrank (flat piece of metal) that goes over the key mechanism. It is held on by a c-clip. The plastic donut that is under it with two wires is the alarm switch.
