Default What Motor Oil do you use?

With so many brands out there I was wondering who is using what
type oil in their Vettes. I believe I am correct in not using a Synthetic
base because of the tolerances. Any good suggestions would be
apperciated thanks

As you may recall I started a thread a few weeks ago "synthetic vs reg". It got quite a bit of action mostly for synthetic. I now have Castrol GTX 10/30 in my 85 with 85K on it. Thanks. JW Drew.

I was told that if you use synthetics in older motors that you will start
getting gasket leaks, is that true?

I also used Castrol GTX in my older Camaros and never had a problem.
I will probably go with it in the Vette.

In the past yes that's true. Dino oil treated gaskets and kept their sealing properties lubed. Synthetic oil did not have those capabilities but they say they have since put additives in to simulate the natural sealant of dino oil.

Many people use it and claim they have zero issues. I have not so I can't speak from experience. I use synthetic oil where it's called for and use dino oil where it's recommended.

The main benefit of using synthetic in application that doesn't call for it is it can lubricate at very high temps and you don't need to change your oil as often. So they say.

I have never been one to change oil at 3K miles in a fuel injected car. A carbed engine I do, but the cars and oils, are so much better designed now than they were even 20 years ago, it's apples and oranges.

I change my oil according to the manufacturers recommendations on my type of driving, always have always will, and that puts me around 5K.

So before anyone has the chance to flame me I'm going back to either C5 gen or PR&C., if you want me that's where you'll find me.

But that wasn't the case before 1992.
When the LT1 debuted, GM moved to synthetic Mobil 1.

You will never get a "correct" answer asking about what oil to use, as it always comes down to personal choice and opinion.

If synthetic was so good why didn't Chevy recommend it in the L98 engine? It certainly was available at that time.

And while we're at it why didn't Chevy recommend it in my '07 5.3 liter Tahoe?

I wouldn't be surprised it boils down to how many dollars Mobil is willing to pay to have their name on the oil filler cap.

Synthetic oil works best, and was designed, for engines that run warm, and built for performance. The L98 cam out in 85 before synthetics were fully developed as we know them today. Amsoil was the first to develop it followed by Mobil One. The early synthetics did not have the seal lubricating factor and if an engine wasn't design to use synthetic it could develop oil leaks and internal oil combustion because it flows so freely, resulting in an engine that burned oil.

In lamens terms with a more tightly built engine with seals designed that didn't need to be lubricated by oil, it will reduce friction/heat and lubricate better.

You can use any oil you want to, but your engine won't last as long nor perform as well if you have a performance engine and use dino oil.

Sorry, the L98 is hardly an engine that would require a synthetic oil, engines have to be built to use synthetic. Sure you can use it in anything, but if they don't design it that way, why use it?

Now back to PR&C.

I use mobil-1 in both my 96 vette and '89 C-1500. Vette-125,000+ miles. The Truck, 215,000+ miles on original motor and transmission (synthetic in trans since 98, motor since 95). I think I got my money's worth.

The newer synthetics have the seal lubicant added in so you can use any oil you want to. But if you start to notice you are using oil or it's burning, go back to dino.

I run nothing but Mobil 1 in my 91(45k miles)'. These cars run hot oil temps in summer for those of us who drive the cars hard and the synthetic is going to protect better. I switched to synthetic, PO used a synthetic mix. I also switched to synthetic in my 88 with 135k, no leaks
