Default Please help - Convertible owners with factory luggage rack installed!!!

Hey all of you Convertible owners that have a black luggage rack installed by the assembly plant - How does the rack get attached to the top rear of the body??
Is the rack screwed in place with screws or bolts/nuts - or is it glued in with some type of epoxy - or is the rack just taped on wih 3M super double sided tape for decorative purposes???
I am going to purchase a '93 40th Anniversary Convertible but it does have the luggage rack which I would never use so I was just wondering how much hassle would it be to remove the rack to clean up the looks of the rear.
Thanks alot for your replies.

If you get the rack off in 1 piece im sure you would have no problem selling it. I have been looking for 1 almost 3 years. I would assume it bolts through the body but will try to check my friends this weekend

It's not that easy to get off, and if you do, you'll have holes in the deck since the rack pieces are bolted on. On the the rack itself and the 3 separate slats, there is a strip of material that is just supposed to pop off, revealing the bolts. I tried once to get those off, but I stopped trying before I broke something. I would recommend that if you really don't like the luggage rack, find another vette that doesn't have one.

Here's a pic:

I have a 1994 C4 Convertible and I am looking for a chrome luggage rack which seems impossible to find. However, if anyone has the mounting diagram of the after market rack that dealers sold, I would like to buy it to know where the mounting holes were located.
Thanks,
Craig

The luggage rack description in the manual is very poor.

You remove the slat pads from the slats.
Appears screws attach the slats to the body.

If you don't reinstall the luggage rack the slat nuts will be exposed.
The manual also mentions the slat nuts can be removed.
I'm guessing there is something embedded in the body panel that holds
the slat nuts.

Diagram 16 shows the break down.
Diagram 17 shows the luggage rack upside down.

Thank you very much for the diagrams ... I was hoping for the dimensions of where the holes were located. I was told by a dealer that the kits they sold years ago came with a full size template that you taped to the trunk area for drilling the pilot holes in the correct location for the mounting hardware.
I was hoping maybe a kit owner might have saved that template. I'm not sure what is under the fiberglass rear deck besides the gas tank and just how much height I have there.
Again, thank you,
Craig

Default C4 Luggage Rack

I'm also looking for a luggage rack for my 1994. I've been looking for several years with no luck. It seems an after market supplier would have come up with one as there is demand. Stainless would be nice, but rubber and plastic will do.

Yes, that's why I am looking for the mounting template with the dimensions on it. There are alot of chrome luggage racks out there, especially in the foreign car market. I would use my Vette for longer trips if I could carry some nice waterproof luggage or a carrier.
I'm just afraid to drill holes where something important may be under that spot.

Thanks for your reply,
Craig

Default Great replies from everybody on the luggage rack question!!

Thanks alot to everybody that responded to my inquiry on how the luggage rak is installed. I was hoping something simple was what the guys in Bowling Green had in mind when a rack was put on but it looks like the rack was meant to hold down some bags.

And a special big thanks to "Hooked on Vettes" for that superb assembly drawing of how the rack mounts to the body, alot of holes to repair if I take off the rack from this 40th Anniversary.
Oh well, that's how it goes!!

I'm not sure how far you are along on this. I have a full size template for the convertible installation. A forum member was nice enough to send me the template, lost his addy.So I'll do the same for you.
Send me your details and we'll see if we can work something out. Sound good?

To kmillar: I'll be pleased to reimburse you for a full size copy of the rack installation plan. If I can';t find an actual corvette rack I may be able to fabricate one out of teak which would serve the same purpose and look pretty good too. I'm at 118 Old Wharf Road, Oak Grove Island, Brunswick, GA 31523. 912-466-9652 Many thanks! Steve

Kmillar,
Thanks for your quick reply. Looks like I am not the only one looking for a template for the convertible luggage rack.
I will pay for any copying and shipping costs and for your time. A Staples or an Office Max would be able to make a full size copy of the template, or any firm that does house blue prints for builders.
I have Pay Pal Account if that helps, or a check or money order. Just let me know your preference.
Again, thank you for your quick action.

Yep, I'm a newby to this blog or thread or whatever. How does one send that info to the seller and keep it hidden?
Thanks for the warning,
Craig

I would also be interested in purchasing a copy of the hole template if possible.

first login and edit that post and save.

then find persons profile (on a post, just left of this, click on person name) look for "PM" for Private Message and click that, make sure to check off (instant email notification) if you want, so you are made aware.

My fathers '93 40th had factory rack installed at dealer when new, I saw before and cringed of the thought of drilling all those holes, the clean look was best for me although that rack was used for long CC trips

We loved the big trunk on later ones!

Hello K Miller,

I'm new to this forum, I love cars and try to manage these black boxes.
I posted a note to you earlier about the availability of getting a copy of your template, as did 3 or 4 other Corvette owners also needing a copy.
I haven't seen a reply, so I might not have sent it correctly to you.

Thanks for your help,
