How difficult is it to change valve covers on a 89 l98 stock?

If your motor is stock and has all the original emissions equiptment it's going to take awhile... You have to remove the egr crossover pipe on the passenger side and also remove the A/C compressor. Then you have to get the 4 bolts out of the A/C bracket so you can move it forward so the valve cover doesn't hit it when you lift it off. There's also a support that goes to the back of the compressor from the exhaust manifold, there's also a support on the altermator.....On the drivers side you have to remove/ or at least loosen the alternator so the valve cover will clear.. I can't remember if the altermator bracket has to be loosened or not.If Im remembering right the valve cover hits a bolt on the bracket.... I have removed all that emissions stuff on my engine and its been awhile since I had to do it this way...I really miss the old days when you removed the bolts and just took them off....WW

7 hours of labor at the dealer! Well worth the $$$ instead of having to deal with the stuff howardjm listed!

Everthing I mentioned is time consuming but not hard.. I personally wouldn't pay anyone to do this job, it's really quite easy, but takes awhile...Save your money for some good stuff ( racing parts) , just do it on a weekend and take your time...You always have use to help answer questions you may have along the way.....WW

WW7 is mostly right however I was able to loosen my AC brackets and pull the VC without removing the compressor. I've done it more than once. The airpump / alternator is easy to remove and the EGR tube isn't hard either with the right tools.

7 hours! No way in H*ll is that a 7 hour job for a skilled tech. I'm a DIYer and my first time was maybe 1.5-2 hours with a bit of cussing. I'll bet I could have them off and back on in < 1 hr now. 7 dealer hours = over $ 700, so if you're willing to drop that kind of cash please let me know where you live so I can hook you up.

There really is nothing too technical involved and not too much to screw up, in fact this would be a good project for someone starting out. It might take you a few hours, be patient and keep track of everything you loosen and remove. It will fight you some but it is certainly doable.

now the heater core on the other hand...

Do you happen to be in your mid 40's, kinda big, say 250lbs and have some lower back issues?

If someone like that existed, hypothetically of course, and had a bad heater core on say an 89 Corvette, for example, do you think that guy could get it done in 3-4 hours? Because I sure am hoping so...

Probably not, bad back restricts people from doing lots of things and if you try to do some of those things then good luck walking for at least a week. I have a neighbor with a bad back and that happened to them, now I always help them with anything they need.
