Hi you may have a broken shifter cable to transmission, or is loose and may have come of? You should feel the clicking and some friction??
Check under the car (safely with stands) and get someone to shift from park to drive etc while looking at the linkage.
That will tell you if the fault lies with the shifter cable or transmission.
Good luck

There is an adjustment at the bottom of the lever on the trans where the shifter cable connects to it. The adjustment might have slipped. There is a slot in the bottom of the shift lever. The stud that the shift cable attaches to has a nut on the back of the lever. Here's a pic (sorry for the dirty mess -- I just took this out of my car two weeks ago):
You can see the adjustment nut in this pic (Rebuilt trans in the car now. It's a LITTLE cleaner. Shift cable soon to be replaced. This picture was taken to show the cable bracket for another thread, so that's why it's in focus and the lever is blurred):

If you are saying that it actually shifts into P but still shows D you will need to lift the shifter console cover to diagnose.
FYI, the indicator has a fork that engages a pin on the side of the shifter.

^^Don't go off the deepend, that cable is just held on with a clip.....anything could have happened to that clip in 28 years. Once you get under there and get a little greasy, you'll see.......you'll need a new clip and a washer.....< $2.00
