Default Any ideas for throaty exhaust note?

I am absolutely tired of the stock, quiet gm system. My car is a 95 lt-1, bone stock. I want a deep rumble, let me know what you all would do so I can start brainstorming a monster! I'm thinking cam, headers and exhaust? What would you do?

If you don't want the headaches, stick with just an exhaust and ONLY have the mufflers cut out. I started with the mufflers chopped off and LOVED it. Then I got hungry for mods and did the headers, which by the way is an endless battle with exhaust leaks unless you get the seal for good gaskets. Then pulled the motor and went inside. Cam, lifters, springs, valves ect. Love it and the jump in HP but sometimes wish I just left it alone.

HP went from stock: 263 rwhp to 337rwhp

no mufflers, no cats

Default Wise Advice to Consider

How true. I owned a 66 Corvette with headers and factory side pipes. I would die to have my 87 rumble like that old one. But it is not doable without destroying the C4's identity.

You may want to do a search on the Corsa exhaust systems. No resonance, great looks, easy installation, and nice sound at WOT is what most say. But if you want a truly throaty rumble, this man's advice is spot on. Hold on to your wallet for the rumble.

Without headers, cams ect...muffler eliminators is going to be the loudest exhaust. It is also the cheapest thing to do. Go to a muffler shop and tell them to cut your mufflers off and weld in strait pipe to replace them. Should be 30-75 bucks...If you like it great, if you want more quiet, more refined, then go corsa (1k-1500)

The 3" Magnaflow system provides a very rich, deep tone without internal cabin resonance. It is a fully stainless system, and the muffs and functional twin outlets are beautiful.

I'd defer to Magnaflow for claims regarding HP increases, due to reduced impedance - the stock 95-96 exhaust is pretty good already.

i have seen a lot of guys in the previous town i lived in running headers, either an x pipe or straight pipe not too long with mufflers and turn downs that are maybe half a foot in front of the rear end.. i dont know if the tight space under the c4 would allow this.. cam is also a major thing for me, what size would you say? im young i can spare the head aches haha ive thought of eliminating the mufflers, but im not sure if i want to cut up the original exhaust in case i want to sell the car.

I replaced my sad stock exhaust with a cat back Polished Stainless Ultraflow Exhaust with a Rear crossover pipe to lessen the resonance. It is throaty, not too loud or annoying. Nothing obnoxious for me , and the price was right.

...with a Rear crossover pipe to lessen the resonance.
Did that pipe actually reduce/eliminate resonance?

I just used muffler eliminators on my 95 which I sold to buy myself a retirement gift in 98 ( a 98 6sp convertible) ....BUT in December of 2010 I finally found myself a 88 35th Aniv couple which I finally got around to removing the mufflers last week...

So for the last week I have been messing with the car around my home with no tail pipes and I honestly like the way it sounds so its going to the muffler shop this week OR I will just pickup the phone and order a set of eliminators for it...

Bad thing with the 95 was that I had to cut off the mufflers/exhaust pipes the 88s' tail pipe and mufflers are installed with clamps... easy off and easy back on IF I ever decide to go that way...

Do you have any pictures?

I was possibly thinking hooker long tube super comps, 3 inch stainless steel exhaust, and just the mufflers. Corsa or borla

You didn't say if your car was an auto or a stick. My experience suggests the autos can have somewhat more problems with interior resonance. Interior resonance sucks real bad so you will want to make sure to avoid that. On my old, bone stock 93, I did muffler eliminators and it sounded really good but still had a slight interior resonance when the auto dropped into 4th at lower speeds.

I do have an automatic. Again I'm not really too worried as this car is turning into a weekend toy and not a daily driver

I have a true dual chambered exhaust with chambered muffler eliminators. I have no drone at cruising speed. The sound is very good.

I understand, but with some systems the resonance can be so bad it will bother you even in a weekend toy.

Default Muffler Eliminators

I bought a '94 Coupe, automatic last year. The first thing I noticed was that the exhaust did not have the throaty rumble of my '84. The GM stock mufflers on the '94 made it sound way too quiet and very emasculating. The solution was a set of muffler eliminators from Corvette Central. My local muffler shop cut off the stock mufflers and installed the eliminators for $60. They sound great outside the car and are not too loud inside the car. I love 'em.

FlowMaster Deltas. Really gives a mean growl but they are terribly noisy at higher speeds.

You don't have to do much to make a C4 loud...just drop off the mufflers and get some straight through type of muffler like a Borla..you will have a headache in no time at all on the highway.

@bugeye will definitely look into muffler eliminators. Seems cheap and effective !

@leftoverture I honestly hope it isn't that bad haha I guess I'll have to look around to see what works and what doesn't.

@hotred94 I haven't looked too much into flowmaster.. Will do some home work tonight on their website.
