Default Would You Buy a 1984?

I can buy a 1984 Automatic Coupe at a good price from a guy in his seventies. Just wondering if you all would do it. I have read that the 84s have lots of problems, so I was hoping that maybe someone on here with them could tell me what they think.

I wouldn't buy any corvette just because it's a good price. I would research the different model years and determine if there is something specific you want. Then I'd evaluate your budget to see if there is a good fit. Personally, I'd never again buy any vette that is not a standard transmission, but that is just me. Also, I prefer convertibles.

In my experience, if you buy a corvette just because it's a "good deal", you'll later wish you had waited and gotten what you really wanted.

Now, that being said, the 1984 vettes have the cross-fire injection system. I believe that engine was only made in two years ('82 and '84). I don't think there is anything wrong with a cross-fire if it's running right. It does make less HP than the later versions of the SBC. Also, it's a less common engine, so you may find less people with experience working on them. Check to see if the car has the Z51 performance package (RPO codes on underside of inner armrest). The 1984 Z51 has a particularly stiff ride. Some people love it, some hate it.

I love my '84, it is a great car. An '84 is 28 to 29 years old (first ones made in June '83) so cars that old can have trouble. Like the others have said, check the car out, drive it, see if you like it. Don't buy it on price alone.

I had an 84, even the base suspension is pretty stiff. You won't be drinking coffee going down the road. Somethings to watch out for are
real slow window regulators, headlight operation, digital dash issues. You would think that after all these years alot of those problems would have been worked out by previous owners. Having said that is was Motor Trends Car of the Year !

If you did ususally a seller like that maintains stuff well.
If it was a huge problem he probably wouldnt own it Id guess.
I would not buy one thats been through a million owners with too many hands put on it.

have not owned an 84 but did own an 87 TBI car and it was the smoothest idling/running/reliable vehicle ever.

I wouldn't buy it just because of a good deal alone. Nothing wrong with an 84. I had a good one.

I would ask for service records if he's kept them, how many owners, mileage, interior condition, and of course pics are always nice..

I love mine. I lucked out with a good one. Great interior, good paint and 136k. Runs great after I replaced timing gear set, electrical tune and it's 29 yrs old (sep-83). Crossfire is reliable and gives me all the power I'll ever need. Ignorance gave it a bad rap.

Drive it. Freeway and curves. Let it coast down a long hill in Drive and see if it starts burning oil(blue smoke). Reveals worn valve seals. It helps if you're handy with wrenches and like to learn. If not, look for the newest and best you can find with your price. There are newer ones..

The early C4s are underpowered..

The only way I'd own an 84 or 85-91 L98 vette would be for a GEN IV conversion .....
(the zr1 and supercharged versions are a different issue) With a GEN IV conversion I could get some HP and ditch that fugly digi dash.

See, different opinions from different folks. I prefer the concave rearend as opposed to the convex look.

Very happy with mine, and it has all the power I need. As said, the Z51 is a love it or hate it proposition - I personally love the sports car feel.
