Default 1984 C4 transmission WTF big problem

I'm kind of having a issue. Drop the kind of change to big problem. I have no gears reverse 1 2 3 or 4 I was driving and then I just did not have any power going to motor is running strong and good, are there any electronics that would stop the car from shifting or the auto transmission functioning on a C4 1984. No big noise or anything. Just no tranny. I stopped parked it and tried all gears. The batttery died from shutting off and restarting it. Had to push it home.

Its gone. If you have an original tranny, its not worth overhauling.

Plenty of ready to go trannys out there with a two to three year warranty.

There were many upgrades to the 700R4 over the years. Very likely cost effective to buy one already upgraded rather than upgrading yours.

Check the cable by the driver's side oil pan. Make sure the tranny shift lever moves when the shifter moves.

Check around at scrap yards and Corvette recyclers. You could place an ad here on the Forum in the Parts for Sale/Wanted section. Doubt if you will find one within your budget though.
I have had great service from www.vette2vette.com

No.

Did you bother to check the fluid level?

If the OP's story is true and accurate, it's probably not the cable. It was already in gear. Supposedly. Still a good idea to check it but...

goes into park just fine, i was just thinking if electronics could cause this. but if im to replace the tranny and i know it's 700R and a found a few on craigslist. will they all fit plug and play or will i have to make changes like one from a 93 Camaro. Or are there any years that would better or not or wouldn't work at all. or what should i shout for if I buy a high pro

There are no "electronics" (as in solenoids) in a 700R4 other than torque converter lockup. It would have no bearing on your issue as described.

You can use a Camaro 700R4, but it's not a drop in. Tail section, if memory serves me correctly, is a different length. Just buy the right one and put it in. End of problem.

Corvettes have a special version of the 700r4 that is unique. It has a very large "V" cast into the bellhousing on both sides. The valve body is Corvette-only and there are many Corvette-only parts in the trans.

One other big difference is that the Corvette has a C-beam that holds up the rear of the trans rather than a crossmember like other cars. You need a special tailshaft housing to bolt to the C-beam (which can be taken from the old trans). The output shaft is also shorter because of the different tailshaft housing. The non-Corvette output shaft can be cut down to fit.

You are WAY better off putting a Corvette 700r4 in your car rather than trying to modify another trans to work. GM redesigned the 700r4 in late 1987 so those are the ones to look for. They also changed the name to 4L60, but it's the same transmission. There is also a 4L60E version (E for electronic), but that requires a computer to make it work. Look for this:

here are 2 of my options used 93 for $300 or used 86 for $500, what would be the easiest swap

I would go with the 93, if the miles and condition are the same. They updated the internal 88 and up, if I remember correct.

Better make sure the 93 tranny is not the E version. I thought all the LT1 cars used the 4L60E but I'm not an expert on this so I may be wrong. Edit - wiki says 94 and up for the Corvette 4L60E so you might be good to go with the 93.

Also, just wondering:

1. Could this be an internal problem that a trans. tech might be able to solve without a complete rebuild? or
2. What would the cost be to rebuild your existing tranny - I know it's probably more than $500 but used ones, especially those that are already 20+ years old with unknown miles are a gamble at best too.

Hope this turns out well for you.

Dave

I would recommend having a qualified transmission repair shop look at your car. If if just quit working there is a lot of thing that could be the problem, short of a major transmission repair or replacement. It is worth checking into before you jump off a cliff. I see this happen all the time! ps. I am just passing through, I clicked on the wrong tab C4 instead of C5. good luck
