When does the engine fan kick on??
I just got my 89 yesterday and I'm finding a few minor things wrong with it. One thing I'm curious about is at what temp is the fan supposed to come on? I was on my way to Fort Worth this morning and came up on an accident, and the traffic was creep and stop, creep and stop. I started watching the temp gauge start to climb, and it got to 227 and the fan never came on. Luckily the traffic started rolling so then it came back down.
Shouldn't it have came on before that? Not sure where to start on figuring out the problem.
Then when I got to where I was going, I was hitting a few bumps and cracks in the road and heard a slight rattle from the front drivers side, but with the brakes applied the rattling quits. Don't know what that is either.
I really like the car and it's really nice looking, I just hope I didn't buy someone else's headache.

You were just a little short of the temp the fan needs to come on..The fan usually comes on at around 228-230 degrees..Let it sit in the driveway until it gets to this temperture to make sure it's working...As far as your front end rattle, it sounds like when the brake pads were installed they didn't put anti rattle clips on the new pads, this is common with guys doing brakes on these cars and not knowing about the clips..Without these clips the brakes rattle when you hit bumps....WW
Below is what the clips look like....If your pads don't have them, you can get them at most auto parts stores....Raybestos, part # H5613A

I love this forum, I was thinking the same thing about the temps as I have watched my temps slowly climb while in traffic. I also didn't know about the anti rattle brake clips!
Thanks!

Keep in mind that the temperature you see on the dash isn't the same temperature the ECM sees. The dash temperature is about 10 - 15 degrees higher because of the location (in the head) vs. the one for the ECM, which is either in the front of the intake manifold or in the thermostat housing, depending on year.
The ECM turns on the main fan when it sees 228°.

You can get a fan switch kit that will allow you to turn on one or both fans manually, comes with switch and directions. You can also have your chip reprogrammed to a lower temp.

The coolant fan does not come on until you are afraid you will boil over. If you learn to look genuinely concerned you can make it come on when ever you want.

Did your fans ever come on? If they came on at a lower temp someone has reprogrammed or replaced the chip in your car. Also at those temps 170-180 your stock T-stat would never open up.

As far as the brake pad rattles, if you don't put the anti-rattle clips on, you can use "RTV" high temperature silicone. It must be the high temperature type only. Remove your pads, put a little blob of it on the back sides of your pads and reinstall them. After the silicone sets up and dries It will stop the rattles and will not cause any problems with the operation of your pads. I've used this method on some of the cars I've had for years.
