Ok, I need to read codes (if there are any) but my CEL is burned out. First off how hard is it to replace the bulb, do I need to tear the dash apart, second could I use a test light to count the flashes instead of the CEL?

Go to Autozone, (etc.)...they'll pull the codes for you.

What year is the car. There is the paper clip method, of which I'm not an expert, or you can get a reasonably priced code reader at the autoparts store for either OBDI or OBDII.
Replacing the bulb imagine is just a matter of taking the dash front cover off.

You need to remove the tilt wheel lever and take out the screws on the front panel. There are a few by the door vent . After the dash panel is off just remove the middle panel and the unit itself the bulbs are right there .Piece of cake.
