Heater Core (Remove dash, or not?) 1989
So hear I go again putting money into this car. I did some searching and half the threads say remove the dash, and the rest say you don't need to. I would obviously rather not remove it because I am affraid it may lead to squeaking in the future. Its a low mile car with very little ever touched. Just curious about some of the experiences had to see if removing the dash is mandatory....or an option. Thanks guys!

2 tips for quick method
Have an 1/4 in extension for the upper far(left) bolt but instead of a 1/4 in socket fix an allen wrench into the end that little bit of space will be vital.
Also get a pack of those HELP door lock clips because your heater door will probably need one because they break easily.

I took off the dash pad, which allows you to see the top heater housing screws.
I bought a replacement heater core from AutoZone. The pipes didn't come out at quite the right angle so I bent them until they fit.

DON"T TAKE THE DASH OUT! Take the passenger side seat out. Lay on your back and remove The carpeted panel on the bottom of the passenger side of the dash. Remove the ECM with 2 screws and you'll then see how easy it s to get at everything you need to from under there. Tearing all the dash and console apart is totally unnecessary on 1984-1989 C4's .

Since we're showing scary pictures of heater core replacement... This is what mine looked like after I drove it to work the day after I replaced the heater core. I left it apart so I could fix it easier if there was a problem (there wasn't). You don't need to take the bread loaf off. I don't remember why I did -- probably had other issues to deal with.

I wonder if a 90 ZR-1 is much different, aside from the ECM being under the hood, next to the power brake booster (like the LT1/4 cars). I've done "a few" heater cores on different cars, and I'd rather kiss a pig than do another one... Oh, well. It's nice to know it can be done w/o removing the dash. My Z does not squeak, and I just as soon keep it that way, thank you very much!!!

Wow thanks so much guys! I think this is going to be the best thread for heater cores yet! Thank you guys for posting those pics. I will use the "allen key" tip for sure Luckily I do have a pretty good assortment of tools. I have a bad back, so I am not looking foreward to this. I would love to pay somebody to do this, but my wallet is bad too. Haha! Thanks again for all the input.
Who do you guys think has the best heater core? I wanna do this as few times as possible. I think spending more money here for a superior part will pay off for sure.
