I am in California and the windshield is in S.Carolina. I am trying to find someone to crate and ship. Anyone know of a service that does that? I tried glass shop chains that have shops in Greenville and in the San Francisco area. I would pickup but its 2500 miles and would be over $900 in gas +$+ RT.
Maybe someone driving from there to college in Calif. Any suggestions (of a helpful nature) would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Bill
The windshield needs to "float" in a corrugated container and I doubt that you'll find anyone that would do it, insure it and ship it. The mistake made by most in the shipping of glass is they attempt to do I in a rigid "crate" an it's just not that easily accomplished.
I've shipped and exported windshields and didn't have issues BUT there's no one that will likely accept liability. Your idea of the "ride" is also not just a casual, if it fits it will be OK. Glass is actually pretty tough stuff but it's not to be moved laying flat in the rear of an SUV.
Wow, you are just full of encouragement! lol
Thats why I was trying glass shops. I figured if anyone could ship glass, it would be them. Windshields aren't made in the backroom so they gotta arrive someway. Look at the freeway, all those windshields running around held by the very edge. That fragile little thing right in front of your face, mile after mile and bump after bump.
I sold a hardtop for a C4, fellow flew in and drove it home. I could have the windshield installed in a C4 drive it home and have it replaced. Must be late, I'm getting "creative".

PM CoupeC5man. I cannot exactly remember but either he or his son is an auto glass guru. He once came to my work and replaced my beater's windshield for $40 and he used new glass. He knows where the deals are and might have a workable suggestion for you.
He is out of the Grand Rapids, Michigan area.

I don't understand the expense your willing to go through to replace the windshield with something that isn't actually correct. It has the "Euro" windshield "bug" and on the wrong side. On a side note if it were actually spotted in a safety inspection does it even display DOT specs? It could actually not pass a safety inspection and then what?
I was at the annual NCRS Convention in Hampton VA yesterday and there was a later ZR-1 on the "JUDGING FLOOR" with a conventional C4 service replacement.
To replace with an OE/GM I could understand but for a reproduction that is no where near correct except that it has the "window" I don't get it. Of the ZR-1's on the floor it presented itself well. Delam was heavy on one other later and a '90 actually looked very good with very little. The convention center lighting certainly wasn't very "friendly" to the delam!
Is the $1800 actually anymore efficient which was the reason for the original windshield? I don't believe that could easily be established and is the C4 replacement that's offered presently any more efficient than the original? Maybe!
Good points. The insurance company is being very reasonable. But this shipping thing is just making the total too high no matter who pays. If it were an original, maybe. Mine isn't just delam, I have a crack on pass. side. How do judges feel about an original with 5-6" L shaped crack? In a local show the judges didn't subtract for it. It hasn't grown in the 2 years I have looked for a replacement.

Long story sort; years ago a ZR1 guy had the laminated windshield reproduced in a small run.
He built serious wood crates and shipped with a popular carrier.
As I understand all of those windshields were received broken and the carrier wouldn't cover the damages.
Make sure your insurance will cover your investment.

Sparky was parting a ZR-1 not long ago and he's a "left coaster" also - if he had it would be used but original and I don't recall the year of yours but I'd rather a used even with delam than an after-market incorrect piece I'd think at the price and the ship.
If the insurance company is OK and has acknowledged the claim I believe I'd sit tight and try for a used or maybe stumble upon a original. If it were an "out of pocket" - definitely a standard C4 buy and I'd consider doing a tint before the install to do the window for the ZR-1. I've discussed that previously.
