Default California Smog vs Intake

I've got a friend in Bakersfield, CA building a 350 with a 218 / 224 114 LSA .535 / .531 lift the machinist swears will pass smog. The problem is how to get a modified intake and still pass the visual? TPiS makes the Miniram with EGR. What has anyone in California done to pass smog using another intake design?

If the intake has a C.A.R.B. number, he is good-to-go. You can have all great parts, and if the car is not tuned properly it will fail the sniffer.

Is "your friend" a C4 owner?

Remember, the 84 to early 86 are supposed to have iron heads. Of course if he installed non-CARB aluminum heads and he painted them black nobody is going to find out.

My mistake, it is a 1990 C4 L98, so we're trying to ditch the TPI intake. The Miniram is not CARB certified. Any recommendations on long tubes would be appreciated.

What have others done? LT1 intake would be too small.

If your friends 90 Vette is not stock with all original emission parts functioning, it will not pass...

Your friend might get away with a mild cam but, if the TPI Intake and original Exhaust Manifolds are not used, his Vette will Definitely not pass.

There are Huge fines and jail time for smog shops who tamper with or record false results so, many smog techs will not visually pass any engine that does not appear stock.

Long Tubes will fail the visual right away. There are shorty headers with CARB.

And what Felpro gasket has it been ported too? 1204, 1205, or 1206? Carb approved means it has an EGR? Shoot me a PM with thoughts and price please?

No, what we mean with CARB is this

http://www.arb.ca.gov/homepage.htm

California Air Resources Board

for example, if you would like to know what's legal in California search it by part. If it is not in the CARB list, it is not legal in California.

Don't worry, in January we have 80°F weather.

http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermk...es/amquery.php

All my parts are California legal.

Long tube headers are illegal also.

A guy in my Corvette club got around that by accident because the manufacturer put a CARB decal in the box by mistake, which he put in his engine compartment. The decal was for the truck version of those headers. The smog people never questioned his decal.

Thank you gentlemen for your candid responses. Here's what we've learned so far:

The Accel Superram is CARB certified. One can be bought here, or possibly from 383vett:
http://www.racingjunk.com/Fuel-Pumps...-superram.html

Headers must be shorty's and CARB certified. Does anyone know who makes these?

PLRX says it can be 80 degrees in So Cal in the Winter. I wonder if he knows which California city holds the record for the lowest average low temperature in the lower 48? Hint: It's about 30 miles from me, and was 33 this morning.

I don't think there are any CARB legal headers for the L98 engine anymore.

Is the city, Truckee?...

It's a 1205. It has an EGR passage with a bolton block off plate presently.

No smog legal shorties for your car that I could ever find.
Strainge they make em for the F bodys

You can use Dougs shorties for the LT1 (they bolt up and have a CARB#) and if you do clean work make the smog tubes from the LT1 work. May get you past the smog popo maybe not. If it came down to it and you did a nice job bet the state ref would let it go. Or just swap em out after you smog much easier. Our smog laws are rediculous.

Superram and that cam will make a good smog legal combo.

Bummer :<( Maybe they can be made by someone?

Yes, while International Falls, MN (Frostbite Falls on Rockie & Bullwinkle) holds the lowest low, Truckee has the lowest average.

I grew up in Pleasanton, CA and lived there for 51 years. Currently, I'm sitting less than 3 miles from the California border, but don't pay income tax!

what a tempest in a teapot. Chevy tested all the then available shorty headers and found non to be as efficient (not to mention quiet) as the then to be released LT series cast iron exhaust manifolds.

Which is why my 91 has LT-1 manifolds on it.
