Pontiac Fiero vs C4
Has anybody owned a Pontiac Fiero? I'd be interested to see how they compare to C4 Corvettes. I know they are down on power but it seems like you can swap in V8's pretty easily.
I saw a Fiero while driving the other day and I didn't really know too much about them so I did a little wiki reading and they seem pretty damn cool. Just to clarify I would NOT be selling my 'Vette, just bring it's crazy cousin back into the family.

I've had a 84 SE 4cyl 5spd, 87 GT 2.8/auto and a 88 GT 2.8/5spd. They are a blast, not as much power as the Vettes, but still very fun in their own way. If I could find another 5spd GT. I would buy it! There is all kinds of swap info and even what was called a SD 4cyl that made stupid power. Google IMSA Fiero. They made some pretty cool wide body racecars too. Almost forgot, Along with the SE and GT, they made a formula in 87 and 88 IIRC. Those are the best one to start with IMHO.

Its fine for a V6, but its a grenade with a V8.

They are all over the place, Just treat it like a Vette, choose a budget and find the best car you can in the budget.

Frizlefrak is a Fiero expert. He has done frw V8 and V6 conversions. Currently he owns a killer 86 Fiero GT.
He will chime in the second he sees this thread.

Melting Slicks
I test drove a V6 Fiero Formula once. It was a slug, and I felt like I was riding a buckboard. And no power steering (I think it was coming on board in '88, or planned for the future? Friz?) if that is important to you. And guys like Friz make them fly with the V8s and turbos.
I still think they look pretty good, I'd just rather have a vette.

Back in the early 90s my son was looking to buy a sporty car. He had his eye on a used Fiero and a used IROC Z28.
I asked the local Pontiac dealer's lead mechanic what he thought about buying the Fiero. His advice was to avoid it as they were not very reliable and were built with a lot of cheap Chevette-type parts.
He ended up buying the 87 305 IROC and had a ball with it. We put headers, Flowmasters, Hypertech chip and a K&N filter on it along with one of those throttle body airfoils (who knew?). We had the local body shop install a factory rear spoiler on it and it looked pretty cool and sounded great!

There is a guy around my area that has a Fiero GT and autox's and drag races with it. He put a 3.8L SuperCharged engine from a late 90's Pontiac GTP. It fit right in and looks good in there. They are low profile and handle good. It would be a fun car to play with, but it is not a VETTE.

There's an 88 GT around my area with a Ferrari 328 body kit and a Cadillac Northstar V8 in it.

Fieros are really popular for doing kit cars. They started building them in 1984 and those models had problems with engine fires. They stopped making them in 1988. The formula was only made one year which was 88. I had an 85 4 cylinder 5 speed and it was a complete dog. If you are a tall person they aren't easy to drive. I'm 6'5" and everytime I let the clutch out my knee would turn the right turn signal on. My dad has that car still and he also has the formula. The formula's and GT's had the 2.8 v6 which I believe was 140hp. A rare option for them was T Tops. A cool thing though is that the sunroof cars you can pull the sunroof out and store it under the hood. They are kind of neat cars, but a lot of them (at least in my area) have been beat to crap. I was trying to convince my dad to do a swap in one of them and from the research I did the V6 is a better swap (supercharged) than the V8. There are V6 fieros (3.8 supercharged series II) cars that are running deep in the 11's and I think some are in the 10's. Youtube has lots of videos.

I've owned a Fiero ever since I bought a new one in 1984. I currently have an 88GT that I bought in 2001. I recently swapped the 2.8 V6 for a brand new 3.4 Chevy S10 truck motor. It is not as fast as my Corvette, but it is a blast to drive and seems to have far fewer squeeks and rattles

If you search Archie fiero you will find a lot of info on V8 swaps. They have a really good forum but I cant think of the url right now. I was liking the idea but the swap is a little more involved than it is worth , to me. They are doing SBCs, Northstars, blown 3.8 Pontiacs and LS swaps at that Fiero forum.

Safety Car
I had an 85 Fiero with a V6 and a 4 speed transmission. It was a lot of fun. It handled great and had a good amount of power for a 2.8 V6. It felt like being in a real sportscar, but it in no way could compare with a Corvette. A lot of my friends just laughed at it and said it was a little toy of a car. If I had the chance to buy one back that was as nice as the one I had, I would just because I really liked it.
