I was in the same boat as you. I wished I knew that these vettes liked to run pretty hot. My first time in stop and go traffic in the summer was a nightmare. I saw that my temp was at 229 and freaked out.

Default Over cooling?

Has anyone run a 2 row DeWitts and a Flowkooler water pump together, while running a stock temp thermostat, and factory settings on the fans (i.e. "factory tune")? Curious as to what coolant temps were seen with this set up during the dog days of summer? For reference, I'm asking in regards to my own car, '96 LT4. Thanks in advance!

I run a 2-row DeWitts, with OEM pump, and a 180°F stat. All runs smooth.

I always run a 160 degrees thermostat in any cast iron block motor and reprogram the fans to turn on at 176 degrees and off and at 166 degrees. I have done this is a Fiero GT, Trans-Am, Z/28 and a Corvette and it always runs cool.

Doesn't it run rich when it's set up that way?

On the L98 engine, the best "bleed" port when filling it is to remove the heater hose from the fitting on the front of the intake manifold. That's the highest point on the engine and will let the air out of the engine allowing a complete fill with coolant. After you fill it to where the coolant is coming out from that heater hose fitting, put the heater hose back on. There should be less than a 1/4 cup of air in the system at that point, and what little there is will "burp" out the overflow when you drive it the first time.

My 92 got to 251° on Thursday when it was 116 in LA. Stop and go traffic .car still said cool. I usually have the speedometer tell me mileage til empty but I decided to check temp and it said 251! Pulled over, shut it off and let it cool (as much as I could in 116° heat ) and limped to work. Ordered me a new 160° thermostat and will be ordering a Dewitt's aluminium radiator soon. I'm hoping. Nothing went wrong .temp was steady right below 3/4 on the analog gauge. Scared the crap out of me. I checked under radiator shroud and it's pretty clean, had some leaves and sticks but cleaned them all up .current radiator looks brand new. Still gonna order a new one for Dewitt's. Is the champion 3 row any good? It's half the price of a Dewitt's . If I can save some cash it wouldn't hurt

The thermostat has nothing to do with that. These cars are bottom feeders, I guarantee you the radiator's fins are clogged up with dirt and gunk.

This was my 95. I used to hose it down every time I washed her; see for yourself. The Dewitt is a great product, but if your Vette is a driver, the OEM radiator is more than capable to cool it down.

ill try and remove it tomorrow to washout the current radiator and I'll install the new thermostat. Been busy this entire week with work and changing the valve seals on it.

So I installed the 160° thermostat and the car stayed at 188 the entire drive home .(DTLA to Encino) with traffic . In traffic it Rose to 197 and then quickly went down .So far so good.

Good to hear. Even if you do have to remove the radiator, it's very doable.

That is considered normal, especially in stop and go traffic, with 100 degree temps. Some info: the primary fan(driver side fan) comes on at 228, and the secondary comes on at 236. But when the primary fan comes on, it should bring the temp down to 215, and it turns the fan off.

So we removed radiator today, was pretty clean, washed it anyway. Then we decided to check to see if both fans were working .Left side fan was not turning on at all. So we unplugged the other fan, and made car run to 240° to see if it engaged the left side fan would turn on .it did not .so we grounded it out and it engaged. I now have a switch under the driver side knee cover thingy. I can turn it off and on as I please. Car ran at 178 All the way home. Feels good .
