C4 Rebody (General Discussion)

Melting Slicks
I might be missing the point or not had read where this has been explained (I read the whole thread rather quickly) What's the point of buying a corvette in that good of condition to completely redo the body? Did you buy the car only for it's frame etc? I don't understand honestly..

Safety Car
If you would have said this much in the first post I would have given you my blessing to do whatever you wanted. That car really isn't worth anything from a collectible standpoint at all.

I considered your advice, then disregarded it completely
Just thought I'd bump this thread back up for those who don't mind a guy hacking up an old fiberglass car that was converted from a coupe to a convertible in the 80's and hasn't run for over a decade... I am planning on retaining the corvette flavor, if that's any consolation. Things are starting to get interesting, so I thought I'd share...
I'll be adding more foam to the front and rear this weekend, so I should have a pretty decent update this Sunday. I'm planning on using C7 head lights/tail lights and drawing heavy influence from the Corvette Daytona Prototype. However it turns out... it will certainly be low

I've never seen anything like your "foam process".
Please continue with more pictures and details.
Looking forward to seeing the finished results!

I am also glad that you are doing this. As time passes these C4s become more and more accessible to new generations with new ideas. Some of the purist will scream blasphemy and puke over their keyboards while gouging their eyes out BUT I see ingenuity here. This is a way to keep people talking and excited over C4s or what's left of them.

As a C4 owner I was totally against your cutting this roadster, especially an '86, up until you stated it was originally a coupe. If its already been cut on, its already beyond my personal line. It isnt any "purist" in me, just like to see what we have left stay on the road.
That said, it looks like you have some talent and I am always interested in custom projects, especially a "garage" project. I like the body lines, the front at this point has hints of a C1. The C7 tail lights kinda determine what the azz end will look like so its gonna be prety interesting when you get done mocking it up.
What is the plan after you sculpt the foam? You gonna lay fiberglass over it to get your panels?
Pretty cool man, keep usa posted!!
Good luck!

Thanks for some positive feedback, I'll be sure to update you guys on the progress.. and to answer a few questions... I haven't decided on exactly what I'll use after the foam. Probably a hard coat of fiberglass then possibly clay, or I may just use body filler to get the final finish. Then I plan on making molds off the body. Once I've finished the panels I'll be moving on to building the cage and new crash bars. And as you can probably tell, the car will be a roadster with a tiny windshield. Trying to keep it simple and clean.

I think a C4 is a good choice for a body conversion, based on the simple premise that someone with disposable income insists on cutting up an old sports car and having fun with their original project. Yes C4s are cool cars, but GM made thousands of them. Base models are not rare or collectible.
Have fun Sleeper, keep the pics coming. While some of us would not do what you are doing, many of us are interested in what you are doing.

Burning Brakes
Cool. Look forward to seeing how this one progresses. I guess I missed your original post. I would have suggested something more like the car from Miami Vice back in the 80's. I think it was a Ferrari Daytona.

I didn't get why you would do this with a C4 with such a straight body (there are plenty with crap bodies that would generally make a better candidate), but the mention of the body conversion put an end to those concerns. So now I say have at it. After all, the C4 has a solid platform to build on.
Outside of the re-body, are there any chassis/engine build plans?

I'll be building a full cage, but I want to keep it as simple as possible. I'm sectioning the firewall, but I'm reusing the steering column (lowering it a bit). The factory brake booster is gone, contemplating running manual brakes... I'm planning on pulling the 2001 LS1/T56 out of my RX7 that has cnc ported 243s and a fairly mild custom cam from Geoff at EPS. I'll swap in my truck motor/auto and use it as a beater for the time being (Planning on doing a junk yard turbo build after the vette is on the streets). I've got some dual adjustable shocks and I swapped springs and did the usual lowering mods.
Anyway, here's a video of the progress I've made. Things had been moving a little slow, but I'm moving it into the home garage, so it's about to get serious. I've kinda changed my vision since last time. I'm now going for a more curvy look. Kinda something that has always done it for me, and it seems like most cars now days are more flat and angular. Just doesn't rev my engine the same. I'm open to criticism and suggestions. I'll be tweaking and changing all the lines, but this is the general idea I'm leaning towards:
