Default Targa Top on the Fly

Lately I have been doing something completely different - for me - with the targa top on the 94 6M Coupe. It used to be that I hardly ever took the top out, but this year for some reason I have grown accustomed to having it out and really enjoying the open air motoring experience. What is the difference you ask? Sitting the top on the car without bolting it on after getting done driving, and just taking it off for the next outing. I know I am blowing minds here and this is earth shattering information but does anyone else do this? Maybe this is just some sort of phase I am going through and eventually I will out grow it, but for right now it seems to be working. Everyone will remind me to not forget to bolt it in when I do take it out with the top in. I don't even stow it in the car, unless I will be gone all day, I just set it on top of my tool box. Get home, pull in garage, windows up, and top in place sans the fasteners. It's also a great time to detail that area that is covered with the top in place.

Anyone else out there ate up like I am?

I do the samething when the forecast says several good weather days are coming, but the black leather interior says put the top back in when it gets to around +85' on sunny days.

I used to do this from time to time with my 94 many years ago... one morning i forgot that it wasnt bolted in and took off... you know the rest of the story.

I suggest some sort of tag that you can put around the mirror steering wheel ect when you park that reads..... TOP IS NOT SECURE DO NOT MOVE THE VEHICLE

I made one for my GS but i rarely drive it and even more rarely remove the top.

I was always afraid Id drive off with the top not secured so I never left it unbolted and sitting on there on my 86 coupe.

Perfect place for a "REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT" tag.

I usually leave the top in the garage when Im out for a drive. The only time I put it in the back is if I drive it to work. Then I put the top on when I get there. My motto is "if the top is on the bolts go in". No exceptions.

Usually try to remember to leave the wrench on the seat if the top is on but not bolted on.

I love driving with targa off. My car goes in the garage, and if I have the top off, I leave it off. Put it on only when necessary.

Ditto !!!

Old age can really affect short term memory.

I think that was the one thing I noticed most as I got older. I look for the worst case scenario now and never give myself a chance to play it out if at all possible

Do I remember correctly that you're supposed to carry the top around with you in case you have to jack up the car? To keep from breaking glass?

I've never had mine go a sailing.
My top is stowed in the trunk at all times when not in use. I have to deliberately take it out that way and then bolt it up when done.

Incorrect. If the car were that fragile it couldn't even survive a pothole.
I jack mine up with the top on or off frequently.

I agree. I don't jack mine up frequently, but I have done it with the roof off. No problems.

When mine is off, it's off. When it's on it's bolted. I would forget!

My standard operating procedure is to IMMEDIATELY tighten the top whenever I put it on. If I need to cover the seats overnight, I cover the opening with a a piece of waterproof material that my wife had. We attached suction cups to each corner and put them on the windshield and back glass. Also, it is sized to cover the opening but not come all the way down the windows, i.e., I put the windows up when using the cloth cover. Pretty simple and a lot easier than putting the targa back on.

At least tighten one bolt, it is not worth the risk. I know three people personally that have had tops blow off.

I agree. It's very easy to forget the Targa is not locked down.
