Default Does the 1989 C4 have anywhere to put a spare tyre?

Hi,

I've seen some C4's with a spare tyre mounted underneath but I don't think mine has anywhere to mount a spare? It's a 1989 C4, do any of you C4 owners have a spare tyre mount?

Apparently a prior owner of your car removed the spare tire and carrier.

The carrier mounts underneath the car between the rear bumper and rear axle. Depending on what's missing, you'll need all or part of the rest of these parts.

Here's a link for a used carrier with hardware -
http://www.ebay.com/itm/84-96-Corvet...3D371861951051

And here's the bolt used to raise and lower the carrier in place -
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1984-1996-Co...3D381838643086

The bracket for the above bolt is between the rear bumper and fuel tank centered behind the license plate. If yours is gone, you'll need the bracket and bolts -
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1984-1993-Co...3D371846884624

And the space saver spare -
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1988-1996-Co...hYg1-r&vxp=mtr

Or you could get the complete kit -

My 1989 convertible has a spare mounted under the rear. Drops down on a tray. Check your owners manual. It shows how to drop it. Some have removed the spare and installed a plate.

My 84 suprisingly had the original tire under there after 32 years, 7 owners, and 171k miles!

The spare tire delete option was available on some years of C4s. The factory replaced the tire and its carrier with a brace for safety in case of a rear end collision.

So did my 93. It was unused, and still held air. There was no way I was going to use it at 22yrs old (at the time), but it hurt ro throw it away!

This is exactly why my 30 year old spare is sitting in the garage. Me and the car both feel better having lost the weight. Made the a$$ much more predictable when swinging it out.

from what I read, the spare aids in rear crash protection, if you remove it, you need to buy the brace bar they sold...

I looked under the car again and found it! Thanks, I didn't take the spare tyre out but I peeked through and rubbed my finger round the edge, it looks and feels like a new tyre but I'm not sure. I'll replace the tyre with a new one in a few months if necessary.

If you peeked through and rubbed your finger around the edge, why not get a three quarter inch socket and drop the carrier down to see the condition of your spare?
Your jack sits on top of the spare wheel, so you might want to check that it's there and in working condition before doing any long trips.
If your jack's missing or your spare's flat, you might as well not carry one.
BTW your wheel brace should be behind the drivers seat (you'll need that too).

I removed my spare and put the cover back. Run excellent to good tires always. Buy a AAA membership if you don't have one. Lugging that doughnut and jack around is extra weight.

I would bet my 89's has never been out of the carrier. I haven't taken it out and I know the 2nd owner didn't, first was a female.

My 84 had the original under there as well, i pulled it down and found the tire had come off of the wheel, and the tire was full of 30+ years of road dirt.

I cleaned it up, filled full of air and put it back.

I'm not sure what model year this practice was discontinued. Probably the year power driver seat became standard.
Happen to have mine out last week due to doing a suspension upgrade. Drop the carrier in the back then 4 bolts on the overhead and it's out. You can see where they are, they're loosely in their respective holes.

I have a power drivers seat in my 86 and it's a steel rim, cause I stuck a magnetic base light to it while working on the car.

That's a new one, do you happen to have a picture or build sheet documenting this.

MVMA specifications mention this through '87 It might be interesting if someone could confirm the "build sheet" CODE and the wheel code SPO mentions. SPO mentions FZ likely for the ALUM and DAA for STL. Typically the wheel code is 1" or so either side of but close to the valve stem. MVMA also mentions Z51.

If you have an early spare you might check!!

*** I have an '86 'vert build sheet that shows A42 and in BLOCK 72 shows an FZ

Another piece of trivia is that the car's sequence number is usually written with crayon on the tread of the spare. The sequence number is also on the rear face of the driver's storage (or ABS) compartment, and on later cars behind the air cleaner.
We also see "ZR/1" on ZR-1's. Because it's the same spare as an L98 car, we presume that the marking is to identify that that spare gets the spare tire bag. I remember an early (<300) 90 ZR-1 that had "KOH" on the spare. I was perplexed, because we were looking for "ZR/1". The owner said "that's King Of the Hill". I thought cool that the line workers were calling it by its development moniker early in it's run.
Wow nice to learn new trivia I have seen the ZR-1 on my spare, I have always been very careful not to wash it off.
