My perspective on people viewing owners of C4s as "rich". By and large, I believe it to be true - at least compared to the average American (assuming that is the majority of this audience). The majority of people who own a C4 own the vehicle outright - no loans. and most owners do not use the car as their primary car. So that is a cash transaction. The new $40K car that your neighbor has is likely bought with a loan (maybe $4K down) or a lease (even less down). So the neighbor has a huge liability and a decreasing value asset. In my mind the C4 owner is wealthier (richer?). On the other hand, if you buy a ratty C4 to use as a daily driver, yes, the other guy is richer, but I think that is the exception rather than the rule.

As I'm sure you will attest, if you own 2 Corvettes you must be not just wealthy but crazy wealthy. They don't believe me when I tell them I've got 12 grand tied up in both of them.

I have yet to get that reaction, but then I've only had mine for a few months and it's been in hibernation for three of them.

My wife DID worry when I first wanted to buy the car that she "didn't want to look like those rich a******s who have three cars." I patiently explained to her that it wouldn't be a problem...because WE would own two cars, and I would own a Corvette.
Hard to believe she almost smacked me.

Seriously? Own an MB, BMW or anything perceived to be more expensive than a Cavalier and you will hear that. If my parents paid for it, I'd have to swallow my pride when they (parents) said it. I mean, you take the money and it isn't free. As they say, NILIF. Till those chicks or dicks are paying for it, their liking or disliking it or me is irrelevant. On Wheel of Fortune, you buy a vowel. Way I look at it, if you like, you can buy an opinion from me that matters to me. Start writing the checks and I'll take your opinion seriously. That or be a hot girl sleeping with me. Till then, it's "mind over matter" (Heartbreak Ridge, IIRC). I don't mind because you don't matter.

That night, were you sleeping on the couch or did you share the doghouse with the family dog?

Well, I thought my Vette was cheap. But if you factor in replacement parts it’s still an expensive car! Some parts you can only get from another wrecked Vette. And the sellers won’t let them go cheap. I paid $180. For 2 arm rests for the doors on my 94. Then I had to rebuild my rear half shafts. Sure I could have done it cheap. But the guy at the auto parts store made a point. The Vettes are great cars because they came from the factory with top of the line parts. So why go cheap with u joints from China on my American made classic muscle car? So Moog it was.... Then I had to do a front ball joint, and a front wheel bearing on the other side. It was an expensive weekend!

nobody really pays attention to what you drive...know somone who really thinks a 20 yr old mb will have people thinking shes "got money". lol

Yes but most Corvette owners do want the adulation although they say "I don't care". You can practically see the face glowing when they tell you how someone told them they have a nice car. In my book, "don't care" isn't quite like that.

Whenever people say you must be rich because you have a Corvette. I reply, “I was until the repairs started”. Haha. I’m only 26 and make the same money as most of my friends I just spend it differently. I love cars and change veh

I’m only 26 and make the same money as most of my friends I just spend it differently. I love cars and change vehicles every year pretty much though I vowed to keep this one at least 3. I like things that are a bit unique which is why I’d like to get an older Maserati next. The one I looked at recently was $15k but I’m sure to friends it might as well be an aventador. I also don’t have kids and most of my friends do. I think of my rides as children and they tend to cost me about the same.

I disagree. Kids will cost more when you consider time and money.

im not sure if my c4 looks newer to them than it is, but IMHO its a $10,000 car at most and probably less bc i have it modified with a supercharger.

someone will pull up in a 65k new diesel jacked up dualie pickup truck and claim that my job must be going really well for me to be able to afford that......

I don't know if you can get rich and stay rich by simply giving money away. Those folks probably don't want to pay any more than they have to unless they are stupid. In which case, the fool and his money will be parted, rightfully so.

Well, considering it is my second $3000 toy motor vehicle cash purchase in as many years, I would say I am richer than the bulk of Americans.

Is cash in hand the only factor determines "richer"? Somehow I doubt it but it's your story, tell it any way you like it.

Most folks assume that a Corvette is out of the question so they never bother to look into the price of used ones! Most folks think my 94' cost about $35k or so.
