Wooops, messed that up. OK, so I was under the hood of my 85 and found this small gray module mounted by the battery, it has a ring terminal that runs over near the positive terminal that is not connected. The car seems to run fine without it, any ideas what this could be? it runs into the main harness and looks to be a PITA to trace. Looks like it might be some kind of relay, but for what?

Very. You should see the passenger side, it has a crack in the tread about 4 inches long and a half inch wide. Don't worry, they wont be on the car when it hits the road again. Its a new purchase.

Probably not. The cooling fan relays are typically mounted up front, on the drivers side of the fan shroud.

That would be the correct location I believe for an '85 primary fan relay

I'd think poster #6 is "maybe" correct.

OP what are the wire colors to the relay?

Besides RED, is there BLK/RED, DK BLU & DK GREEN/WHT

Could very well be; I'll happily stand corrected. However that is a weird looking "factory" mount location, push nuts and wire combo.

I believe that the original cooling fan relays on the wheelhouse panels were actually retained with "push fasteners" very much like what's in the snapshot. Might NOT be original but certainly what should be in that location.

OP hasn't returned but I'd think will.

For the '85 Corvette, this is DEFINITELY the relay for the main radiator fan! The dangling wire was probably added by a previous owner for a switch to turn on the fan from the cockpit.

(For anyone interested in adding a switch for manual fan control, there's a much easier way for the early 'vette's. Just ask! I don't want to hijack this thread)

Well, had a chance to check it out this weekend, and it DOES appear to be connected to the fan! If my checking out is correct, it appears to have been modified to make the fan run all the time by hotwiring it to both the battery and ignition, so when you start the car, it energizes the relay and starts the fan up. Working to revert it to "normal" operation, thanks for the help, guys.
